Washington Commanders will face Miami Dolphins in Madrid on Nov. 16 for the first NFL game in Spain

WASHINGTON — Tuesday, the NFL announced the Washington Commanders will play the Miami Dolphins in Madrid, Spain, Sunday Nov. 16.

It will be the first time in nearly a decade the Commanders were headed overseas.

Brendan Romero says he’ll be there.

“The fact that we get to play the first ever game in Madrid is, I think, a great relationship between the NFL and Spain, as a whole,” said Romero.

He says his parents emigrated from central Spain to the DMV bringing their love for the so-called, “other fútbol”, Real Madrid soccer, with them.

Romero is a board member of a DC-based Real Madrid Supporters Club.

“I’ve had the love for the club for as long as I can remember and growing up here, we had The Commanders franchise for again as long as I can remember as well,” said Romero. “For me, it was a perfect merriment and parlaying the two together.”

Romero said when he gets to the stadium, he’ll be sporting gear from both teams.

“Just given that’s a better reflection of my personality and my fandom, but I think its going to be a very special thing given that it is the first NFL game to be ever played in the country, much less that’s that beautiful stadium,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a really, really cool environment.”
