The Vegetable Pavilion has been closed since the beginning of 2022, when strong winds tore off part of its roof and the pavilion was closed for repairs. The roof reconstruction and replacement work was completed in April 2024, but the pavilion still needed to undergo planned roof reinforcement work.
“The renovation of the Vegetable Pavilion is a significant investment in the development of the market – it will not only preserve the historical heritage, but also create a modern and comfortable environment for both traders and shoppers [..]” said Ojārs Valkers, Chairman of the Board of Rīgas Nami Ltd.
The roof replacement and metal structure reinforcement work on the Vegetable Pavilion was carried out by AS ‘Būvuzņēmums Restaurators’, which was selected through an open public procurement process. The total cost of the renovation work amounted to EUR 1.3 million, including EUR 709,000 for the replacement of the roof covering and EUR 612,000 for the reinforcement of the roof structure.
With the opening of the Vegetable Pavilion, industrial goods traders from the Milk Pavilion will be temporarily relocated there, and another catering area will be created. This will allow the planned reinforcement of the Milk Pavilion roof structure to begin in the near future, with an investment of around EUR 633,000.
Riga Central Market has five covered pavilions: Milk, Meat, Fish, Vegetable and Gastronomy. All of them will require extensive renovation work of varying scope in the near future to ensure the continuity of the market’s operations. SIA ‘Rīgas nami’ plans to invest EUR 1.9 million in ensuring the operation of the pavilions until the end of 2025.
