Sparkling winemakers from Luxembourg’s Moselle region collectively received 11 gold medals and six silver medals at a prestigious competition last week.
The annual “Concours National des Crémants de France et de Luxembourg” (national competition of French and Luxembourg crémants) was held on Friday in Beaune, the centre of Burgundy’s winemaking industry.
Luxembourg crémants were recognised for “their finesse, their freshness and their elegance,” the agriculture ministry stated on Monday.
Four vintages from the Domaines Vinsmoselle cooperative took a gold medal, as did three from Caves Gales and one each from Cep d’Or, Krier-Frères, L&R Kox and Schumacher-Knepper.
Two types of crémant from Domaines Vinsmoselle and two from Cep d’Or received silver medals, as did one each from Caves Gales and Caves St Martin.
A total of 25 gold, 16 silver and 7 bronze medals were awarded at the competition.
Under EU labelling rules, only wineries in certain areas of France and Luxembourg can be called crémant. Bubbly from other regions can be marketed as “sparking wine” or use other geographic designation labels, such as Champagne, cava (from Spain) or prosecco (Italy).
Luxembourg’s agriculture ministry said the Grand Duchy would host the 35th “Concours National des Crémants de France et de Luxembourg” in April 2026. It will also mark the 35th anniversary of Luxembourg’s crémant designation label.
