Coinciding with the 9th edition of the Festival of Sustainable Development, organised by ASviS (Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development) in Italy, the Italian Embassy in Zagreb joined two initiatives dedicated to the theme of sustainability. The first was the ‘ESG Sustainable Future’ event organised in Zagreb by the local business publication Lider Media and in which Ice was one of the partners.

The conference provided an opportunity to discuss the need to adopt new business models geared towards socially responsible and sustainable development, also in the light of the relevant EU legislation. The event was attended by over 200 representatives of the local public and private sectors and two ANIMA Confindustria member companies (Rubinetteria Paffoni, a leader in water saving and eco-friendly design, and Valvitalia, a global player in the production of components in the energy, naval and railway sectors), as well as the Italian company ‘Bilanciarsi’, specialised in consultancy in the field of drawing up company balance sheets and obtaining certifications on compliance with ESG standards. Speaking on behalf of the Italian Ambassador to Croatia, Paolo Trichilo, the Deputy Head of Mission, Ms. Maria Cristina Costa, recalled the Italian private sector’s growing commitment to adapting production processes to ESG standards, with a focus on environmental protection, inclusiveness, and the promotion of forms of governance based on transparency and accountability. Ms Costa also recalled Italy’s commitment to implementing the UN 2030 Agenda, a prerequisite for creating favourable conditions for the spread of sustainable business models. Another important event on sustainability was the ‘UNWASTED’ Forum, organised in Opatija by the World Academy of Sciences and Arts in cooperation with several local actors, including the Ministries of Tourism, Environment and Agriculture and the Chamber of Economy. The event was supported by the Italian Embassy in Zagreb and the Italian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce (ICCC). It brought together institutional, private sector and scientific actors to discuss the circular economy, innovation and the promotion of sustainable modes of production. The Forum also saw the participation of Italian experts, such as Amb. Pietro Sebastiani, Special Advisor at the International Development Law Organisation (IDLO), and Arch. Maria Cristina Finucci, founder of the ‘Garbage Patch State’, an initiative focused on the issue of plastic debris dispersion in the oceans and its environmental consequences. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Consul General of Italy in Rijeka, Iva Palmieri, who, in bringing greetings from Amb. Trichilo, highlighted Italy’s leading role in the circular economy in the EU, as well as the commitment of the entire Italian production system to adopt sustainable production cycles, aimed at limiting the waste of natural resources.
