  1. **From Steve Benen, producer for “The Rachel Maddow Show”:**

In the wake of a key diplomatic opportunity, Trump backed off his own goal of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, instead setting the stage for possible negotiations about a possible ceasefire, which might ultimately lead to a possible resolution.

The larger timeline paints an even less flattering picture for the American president.

Trump’s Plan A for the war in Ukraine was ending the conflict within 24 hours by way of a secret strategy he assured voters was real. When it became obvious that his strategy didn’t actually exist, Trump moved on to Plan B: He told Russia that if it failed to end the conflict quickly, the White House “would have no other choice” but to impose new economic sanctions.

  2. Because he’s only really great, truly tremendous at failing.

  3. Populism has its limits. More so than for any other politician, it’s the populist’s own promises that hamstring their government. Ironically.

  4. Showing such a disappointing weakness time after time is a disaster when negotiating with russians. You have to be decisive, take initiative and pose a believable threat if your terms are not met. At this point it’s more like begging for peace and it will only make russians push further and further

  5. By this same logic, Biden failed to make a deal for 2 years right? Right??

  6. You can’t really stop a war if neither side is willing to. The Ukrainians are still buoyed by American and European support and Russia is winning the war on the ground. The Ukrainians are still getting angry at Trump for daring to suggest they give up Crimea or really any Ukrainian territory and that just shows you how bad the Ukrainians are reading their current situation. They are never going to get Crimea back along with Donetsk, Luhansk and Mariupol and if they think they can they are beyond help. A ceasefire now can prevent any more losses that can never be recovered but the Zelensky is still pondering how to get Crimea back while Pokrovsk is being surrounded and the Russians are inching back towards Kharkiv and Sumy.

  7. I mean, that’s obvious.. he knew that this would never work, ending the war was a promise he knew would fail, but after elected is not like it really matters. Now he can just say “oh no, well, we tried folks, we can’t do anything if they want to keep fighting”.

  8. Ah yes MSNBC, just the source for good geopolitical commentary – well done

  9. Can’t believe he lied when he said he’ll fix it in the first 24h. I’m starting to doubt other things as well like “they are eating the dogs”.

  10. The biggest fail regarding the Trump administration ending the Ukraine war is wanting something from Putin. MAGA wants Russia to decouple from China. That alone gives Putin “all the cards”. He can yank Trump around by the balls all day. The only way the Ukraine war will end is if Putin has taken it all or he’s out of money, bodies and gear. If NATO wants it over faster, Ukraine needs an influx of international fighters and equipment.
