Stunning grass snake basking in the afternoon sunshine. Completely not bothered by me. Slithered off after a few mins. I'm guessing he, or she has been living in my compost bin.

  1. What a beauty. Ballsy too, I’ve never come across a snake who didn’t immediately slither away at the sign of a human!

  2. They absolutely stink when threatened. We would find them everywhere in the field we would play in as kids along with Adders, Slow Worms and Lizards.

  3. Living in London I’ve never came across a snake know they existed but thought they were only seen in the countryside.

  4. Uhhh what???? Theres snakes on the island of great britain???? Since when? Somebody exprain

  5. Beauty but me screaming off in the distance then peeking from a nearby window. I know they are harmless but still give me shock

  6. What a beauty. I saved one from the road once. The stench they produce when threatened is insane, it took me hours to wash it off my hands. Never grab one.

  7. Absolutely gorgeous! I’m so jealous, I’ve only seen tiny grass snakes in the wild

  8. I once had one of these leap out of a bush just as I was passing on a footpath. The frog it was trying to catch was clever and jumped onto my foot for safety. The whole experience was unsettling, but something I’ll never forget.

  9. Hell yeah, that’s a proper one. I’ve only seen tiny little noodle ones in real life – plenty of full grown adders, but not these beauties.

  10. Yes, she probably is living in the compost bin! It’s nice and warm (insulation) and she might be eating any mice and voles living in there 🙂 consider her natures pest control

  11. I don’t mean to be a pedant*, but that isn’t a Grass Snake (*Natrix natrix*) – it’s a Barred Grass Snake (*Natrix helvetica*). *N. natrix* isn’t found in the UK.

    *Yes, I do…

  12. They would love this over at r/snakes (I thought I was there, at first).

  13. First of all why is this in casual UK? this is scary AF and secondly where in the UK are ya? I might have to sell and move to Antarctica. I rather take my chances with a polar bear

  14. Beautiful! Lucky you 🙂 I’ve only ever seen one grass snake but I have been lucky enough to see a sand lizard in my time – the sand dunes where I grew up have them, and natterjack toads too. I would love to see a big chonker like this gorgeous thing 😍😍
