The economic historian, who has always been out of line, rejects the government’s banking interventionism but is the first to explicitly criticize the incomprehensible silence on the matter by the Bank of Italy and the ABI, which have so far failed to react to political interference.
Julius Sapelli, historian of countercurrent economics with great knowledge of the banking world, having been, among other things, a Government Advisor to the Foundation in the early 2000s Monte dei Paschi and member of the board of Unicredit Banca d’Impresa, he’s not one to mince his words. And that was also the case in an interview he gave to the financial TV channel CNBC Milano Finanza. Sapelli did not spare any reprimands to the Government for its interventionism in the banking game: “In a country like Italy that needs to attract foreign capital, government interventionism does not bring good and is the last thing we need”. However, Sapelli rightly added, the silence of the Bank of Italy and also that ofAbi. If faced with the Government’s aggressive interventions – with the endorsement of the Ops of Monte dei Paschi-Caltagirone-Delfin su Mediobanca and with the Golden Power on Unicredit for the operation on Banco Bpm – the supervisory authorities and trade associations do not raise their voices, who should? Their silence, as well as the dirigism of the Government, are Italian anomalies as big as a house and Sapelli is absolutely right to be indignant. Bravo Giulio.
