Turkey is the second strongest member of NATO. They have the ability to take all of Cyprus if they want. By contrast Greece brings very little to the table. Turks also hate Israel. You know who would be fine with letting them have all of Cyprus, and have little issue with their hostility to Israel? Russia and China. The more the west pushes them away, the more it’s only engineering its own betrayal. And then they’ll cry foul if it actually happens lol.
Ofc it won’t happen now, only at the worst possible time – the day you actually need them, and they choose to strike out for their own interests instead of dying for your sake. Right when your forces are caught up elsewhere. Don’t pretend it came out of nowhere if that transpires. The EU has spent decades nurturing that possibility, with each decision making it more likely.
With Russia in northeast, both Russia and China in the north (the Arctic), and the US gunning for Greenland in the west, the last thing Europe needs another belligerent in the southeast. If shits hits the fan, you might even have the south to deal with, with Morocco deciding to finally take Ceuta (which they consider to be occupied by Spain). Basically, don’t make more enemies.
Good. Turkey is a belligerent State that has invaded and is illegally occupying half of an EU Nation. Europe including them in its rearmament plan would be shooting itself in the foot
I get why Turkey is getting left out of this and it’s mostly because they haven’t met the standards of EU membership that have been *repeatedly* demanded of them. But let’s not forget that after the US, Turkey puts more boots on the ground for NATO *than any other country*. They’ve got legitimate beef about the defense funding, even though the EU and NATO are separate organizations.
I am ***not*** defending the Turkish gov’t here. They are run by an a-hole who does a-hole things and will continue to until a legitimately democratically elected non-ahole can get the job. The opportunity is on the cusp of happening but the a-hole has jailed the opposition. Time for the EU to start putting pressure on the a-hole to guarantee free and fair elections or lose out completely.
This article is 2 months old and it’s clickbait. This source should be banned. Not just Turkey also US, UK are excluded. I’m curious how are they going left out US and UK because EU cannot make turbofans for their planes. Only France got Snecma M88 for Rafele and it’s just garbage compared to US and UK offerings. They cannot exclude US and UK, it’s just not possible. They are going to buy tons and tons of subparts for their system from US.
Turkey hasn’t made any effort to join the EU in over a decade. Why would they be included in an **EU** defense scheme at this point? Why is this considered news
I like it how the article ignores how the UK government said they’ll pay money towards the EU defence budget to participate. UK even opened or negoiated access to their fishing waters after Denmark and France complained.
What is with this anti-UK narrative that the EU is trying to push. Guh
