Switzerland (6-0-1, 19 points) took the top spot in Group B at the 2025 IIHF World Championship and remains in Herning, Denmark, on Thursday for its quarterfinal matchup against Austria (4-3-0, 10 points) at Jyske Bank Boxen. The Austrians placed fourth in Group A, which was played in Stockholm, Sweden, and made the nearly 600-mile trip to Herning for the game. The Swiss, silver medalists in 2024 in Czechia, are in the knockout stage for the seventh straight time at the Worlds, while Austria is in the quarterfinals for the first time since an eighth-place finish in 1994.

Switzerland clinched the top spot in Group B with a win on Tuesday over Kazakhstan, coupled with the United States’ 5-2 victory over Czechia later in the day. The Swiss trailed 1-0 until Kevin Fiala (Los Angeles Kings) found the net with five seconds left in the second period and took over the game in the final period with three goals. Sven Andrighetto (ZSC Lions, Switzerland) scored the go-ahead marker at the 7:15 mark of the third.

Andrighetto’s seven goals are tied for the most in the tournament, while Tyler Moy (Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, Switzerland) and Denis Malgin (ZSC Lions) share the team lead with nine points. Goalie Leonardo Genoni (EV Zug, Switzerland) was 3-0-1 in the preliminary round, posting a 1.48 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage.

Dominic Zwerger (Ambri-Piotta, Switzerland) and Vinzenz Rohrer (ZSC Lions) each scored twice, as Austria pummeled Latvia 6-1 in a de facto elimination game for the final quarterfinal berth from Group A on Tuesday, while David Kickert (Red Bull Salzburg, Austria) made 23 saves.

Rohrer shares the team lead of four goals with Marco Kasper (Detroit Red Wings), while Kasper, Zwerger and Peter Schneider (Red Bull Salzburg) each have seven points. Kickert has played in five games with a 1.94 GAA and .920 save percentage.
