A new budget proposal by the Hamilton County School Board was presented to the County Commission Monday.

The plan could close a funding gap of more than $16 million that came after a heated debate among members of the school board.

Hamilton County Commissioner Chip Baker thanked the board for their measures in proposing a balanced budget, and warned that next year may prove to be an even greater challenge.

“Warning, next year, there won’t … I don’t foresee, I can’t speak for my colleagues, I can’t speak for the mayor, but I don’t see a tax increase next year,” Baker said in the meeting.

While the $674 million budget addresses several priorities, some parents say it continues to fall short in one critical area: exceptional education.

Several budget cuts that were proposed this year included exceptional education instructors and certain bus rides/routes to schools.
