Cardinals prepare to elect next pope at conclave • FRANCE 24 English

Cardinals from around the world have been called to Rome in the wake of Pope Francis’s death. They’re now gearing up to elect his successor and a string of names are being seen as potential contenders. Among them is Petro Parolin. The Italian cardinal served as the Vatican Secretary of State for most of Francis’s papacy, making him the Pope’s chief adviser. Familiar with the intricacies of the Holy Sea central government, Peruin is also well known to world leaders and diplomats and has experience in the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. Another name being mentioned is Pier Batista Pabala. Born in Italy, Pizzala moved to Jerusalem at the age of 25. Pope Francis named him as the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem in 2020. My thoughts go without distinction to all who are affected by this war in Palestine and Israel and the world region. He has impressed fellow cardinals with his understanding of the conflict in Gaza, though his closeness to Francis could count against him among cardinals wanting a change in direction. Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was considered a potential candidate for the role as far back as the 2013 conclave which saw Francis selected. The former Archbishop of Manila has become one of the church’s leading figures. He’s been dubbed by some as the karaoke cardinal. Imagine all the people. [Music] He’s proved energetic in media coverage, including when Francis visited Manila in 2015. It’s like a big big big big national fiesta. He’s called for the church to re-evaluate its stance towards gay people. That’s not the case for Cardinal Fredolan Ambongo Bosungu, who hails from the DRC. Archbishop of Kinshasa for 7 years. Ambongo is a cultural conservative and is against blessings for same-sex marriage. As the conflict in the DRC rages on, Ambongo has repeatedly called for peace. [Music] We’re going to find solutions to our crisis that have been going on for decades. By engaging even with those we consider our enemies. Another name that has emerged is Jean Avein who if elected will be the first French pope since the 1300s. Considered close to the late pope, he has spoken out against the criminalization of immigrants, a stance very much in line with that of Francis. A highly secretive process, the conclave is set to begin on May the 7th.

Cardinals from all over the world are poised to elect a successor to Pope Francis at the conclave that begins Wednesday. There are currently 135 cardinals who are under age 80 and eligible to vote in the conclave, hailing from 71 different countries in the most geographically diverse conclave in history.

  11. Every news source keeps saying “secretive process”. I find that misleading. The guidelines for the process are easy to look up. What is secret is how it all plays out. Almost like if you could read the rules of a sports game, but you never get to watch the sports game or hear what happens in the game. You only hear what the rules of the game are, and who the winner is.
