Turkey ready to host Russia-Ukraine peace talks, Erdogan tells Putin • FRANCE 24 English

In the early hours of Sunday morning, Vladimir Putin hosted a press conference from the Kremlin to respond to Western leaders who gathered for a summit in Kev a day earlier. The Russian president rejected the European ultimatum for a ceasefire, but proposed holding direct talks with Ukraine this week. We propose to the KV authorities to resume the negotiations that were interrupted by them at the end of 2022 to resume direct negotiations and I emphasize without any preconditions. We propose to begin without delay next Thursday, May 15th in Istanbul, where they were previously held and where they were interrupted. Putin’s proposal goes against Ukraine’s wishes. In a phone call with Donald Trump on Thursday, Vladimir Zilinski confirmed he was open to negotiations with Moscow, but only if an unconditional ceasefire was established first. On Saturday, Emanuel Mak Friedrich Mertz, Karma, and Donald Tusk showed their support to Ukraine. Together with the United States, the allies called out for a ceasefire of 30 days starting on Monday. In the event of a violation of this ceasefire, we agree that massive sanctions would be prepared and coordinated between Europeans and Americans. The European allies pledged to continue sanctions on Russia and potentially increase aid to Ukraine if the proposed unconditional 30-day ceasefire was not accepted.

Putin on May 11 proposed direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul aimed at ending the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv was willing to talk but Moscow must first agree to a ceasefire.

  8. In other words, more of the same. If sanctions and military aid didn’t work in the past, what makes Europeans think they will work this time? As someone once said, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. To me, this looks less like strategy and more like policy inertia—doing something simply because doing nothing seems worse, even if that “something” is ultimately ineffective.
