UK will roll out chemical castration for sex offenders

1. Voluntary application in return for a reduced sentence make sense, but potentially making it mandatory is straight-up draconian as it messes with the concept of a person’s rights after they have done their time. 

   I’m conflicted with this policy, to say the least. However there needs to be a recognition of the problem that “tough on crime” mandates produce when overall crime rates have fallen yet there are more incarcerated due to higher sentences or sentencing minimums.

2. I have no knowledge of criminology, but I always thought this practice was discouraged because most sex offences are actually because of power and violence, not lust?

4. Genuinely fucking horrified my country is doing this. Why not just bring back the death penalty too? For fuck’s sake, you embarrass everything that has ever called itself a labour party. Not a shred of the values the party once stood for.

5. Chemical castration for sex offenders is a bad idea. First of all it puts innocent people who get convicted in harms way.and if you think this will prevent re-offencion you are wrong. Rape isn’t about sex. If someone wanted to have sex they would just go to a brothel, no legal trouble no risk of injury etc etc. Rape is about abuse and power. And you don’t need a penis to abuse people, they will just rape with something else

6. Oh FFS, this is f-ing stupid and disgusting. What happens when it turns out that they got the wrong guy because the Met just grabbed the nearest black man and fabricated evidence? “Sorry, your fault for being black and handy for us to pin this on.”

   There was a pedophile ring operating out of Thatcher’s government. Police and the attorney general at the time decided not to prosecute. The information was hidden, not just for the standard 30 years, but until all those pedophiles had died and were beyond prosecution.

   There is already a two-tier legal system in the UK. Let’s not make it worse by chemically castrating innocents in the desperate search of votes from the white geriatrics who vote Tory anyway…

   She’s said this approach is only going to be used or mandated for sexual offenders whose offences were motivated by ‘compulsive and invasive thoughts about sex or problematic sexual preoccupations’ rather than by desire for power, control, harm. I can’t imagine that’s a significant proportion of sexual offenders, so it isn’t, as she’s claimed, a necessary intervention to reduce prison populations.

   What I can imagine is this going the same way it did the last time it happened in Britain — that it will drive people to suicide.

   And re: having it be voluntary in exchange for a reduced sentence: how much freedom would you give up to _not_ have this done to you? How many years of your life can the court barter with before it’s not voluntary but under threat?

8. The reasonable punishment for murder, sexual assault, child molestation and rape is:
   You go to a humane prison, are given rehabilitation, and depending on intesity of crimes and successful rehabilitation, are then eventually released.

   Almost no sex offender has ever done a crime worthy of life in prison, a death sentence, chemical castration, or physical mutilation. There are sex offenders who did nothing other than sleep with someone 4 years younger than them. There are sex offenders who were drunk and pissed in public. There are sex offenders who quite literally accidentally downloaded CSAM and the judge just said “oh well, should have been more careful” and then sent them to prison anyway.

   Most pedophiles were molested as children and are not fully in control of their actions (hence most cases being semi-spontaneous famiail abuse), thus necessitating preventative therapy (which often works). Most pedophiles also never view CSAM or harm a child and repress the thoughts. They also have the lowest recidivism rates, meaning that most will not reoffend.

   I have one of the most controversial opinions on Earth: Society’s foaming-at-the-most treatment of sex offenders and pedophiles is directly causing more cases of abuse, which lead to increases in trauma caused sexual disorders like pedophilia. A person with the disorder who has never viewed CSAM or harmed a child can be put on watchlists, have their children taken away, be ostracized by their friends and family and lose jobs if they ever even admit to just having repressed thoughts. Its insanity. This is making people avoid the necessary therapy to prevent the cycle of abuse.

9. lmao this is the face of UK “left of centre” government. Truly spending political capital on the needs of the people. What a shambles of a nation; from “the sun never sets” to “the dawn never breaks” in about 100 years. Their next conservative government is going to resurrect Oswald Mosley and make him an Anglican saint at this point.

10. I think they should go further and use mechanical castration. Nobody here wants to accept that rape is done for sexual gratification. You can think of it like an extreme kink. It is well known that castration is the only cure for pedophelia. Particularly remorseful ones will do it voluntarily.

13. This will not be used against the right wing politicians or religious figures who actually commit sex crimes, it will instead be used against trans or gay people who commit no actual offences but are seen as ‘perverted’ for just being their real selves in public.
