I feel sick saying anything positive about the Swiss or Dutch, but their trains are good. Comfy, clean, modern – peak European experience.

I would say the same about Deutsche Bahn too, for the most part.

Renfe is really quite good, though their online booking system feels clunky and antiquated.

I don't remember much about trenitalia except that it seems pretty good – on-time, clean, etc.

SNCF also feels modern and well-functioning, but their prices are bone-chilling. Another huge drawback of SNCF is that when taking their trains you will have be in close proximity to French people.

British trains in general are disgustingly expensive and also feel a little 'run-down', not entirely modern.

  4. If NS is at the very top of European public transport I feel desperately sorry for all my Eurobros. Because if that steaming pile of garbage is the best we can offer then all other public transport must be exponentially dogshit

  5. Trenitalia has either top-notch high speed railway services or underwhelming (sometimes below third world standard) regional services.
    As a commuter I often envied livestock.

  8. Renfe might be good but I was really shocked when I learnt that you always need a reservation, even for regional trains.

    Personally, I prefer DB where trains are often overcrowded but at least you get on without a reservation.

  11. As a swamp spawn living in the gold vault, you are right about the SBB; they are expensive, which is ok on a Swiss salary, and they are punctual and good.

    As for the NS; my brother in Christ what have you been smoking?! I mean, for the Netherlands I can well imagine what you’ve been smoking, and that really is a prerequisite for putting NS in the top tier…

  13. If you think the french trains are expensive I doubt you really used SBB. They are by far the most expensive in europe.

  22. Took a train last year through Germany and I had literally 6 hours of delay! DB is F tier as far as I’m concerned. It was an ÖBB nightjet from Innsbruck to Utrecht btw, but blaiming Germans for Austrian crimes is an important tradition I intend to keep going.

  26. TFL (London Underground) should be at the top, to travel to Pancras station to get the eurostar, I walk into the underground, tap my card/phone on the turnstile on the way in and out, never have to even think about tickets for one pico-second, I am charged automatically.

    While in Paris I have to dick around with paper tickets that some shitty archaic machine that looks like it was pulled from a dystopian cyberpunk ghetto can eventually be coaxed into dispensing, then try to figure out where the ticket actually gets me, end up on the wrong side of a barrier because fuck you if you take the wrong train or switch from certain trains to other trains. Everyone knows pierres take no prisoners when it comes to tourists since they get commission for fining people, so to avoid a fine I ended up going through one of the no exit barriers, although small Pierre W is that the guy coming in held it open so I could make my escape.

  28. Has CFF sorted out their online booking system then if you’re saying it’s better than Renfe? Felt like a website from 2006.

  30. There’s a lot of train companies missing from that list. I have personally worked for DSB, just to mention one.
