European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has highlighted the potential for the euro to assume a more dominant global role in response to the unpredictable policies of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Bloomberg reports that Lagarde sees this as an opportunity for the eurozone to capitalize on the current economic landscape.
In a speech delivered in Berlin, Lagarde emphasized that addressing long-standing economic constraints within the European Union could lead to reduced borrowing costs and protection against currency volatility and sanctions. She referred to this period as a potential “global euro moment,” urging Europe to take proactive steps to enhance its economic sovereignty.
Lagarde’s remarks come amid a backdrop of investor behavior that has seen a shift away from the dollar, bolstering the euro’s position. This trend, which Lagarde previously described as “counterintuitive,” is now seen as a justified response to the current trade and economic climate.
The European Central Bank’s latest report indicates that the euro’s international role remained “broadly stable” in 2023. Lagarde outlined three critical areas for elevating the euro’s status on the global stage. These include establishing a solid geopolitical foundation, completing the single market, and increasing joint financing for European-level initiatives.
Lagarde’s call for more joint financing echoes sentiments expressed by ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel, who has advocated for a larger European bond market to support the euro’s global role. Lagarde stressed the importance of a robust legal and institutional framework to ensure investor confidence in the euro’s long-term value.
