This gets my vote, so much better than the Madri it's clearly a 'tribute' to. The Monster Munch homage is better than the tealt thing too.

  1. I do love Aldi’s approach to almost comedic knockoff branding. “Anti-establishment IPA” sure mate

  2. The Proper Job knock off Aldi do is a personal favourite. A Proper Hoppy IPA

  3. Aldi’s mint Aero knock off is better in every way, the chocolate is nicer, much thicker and the mint is more minty.

  4. Aldi chocolate oaties much better than hobnobs and so much cheaper

  5. Literally had a can of this the other night. Was incredibly impressed. Genuinely a nice lager for dirt cheap.

  6. The Vive Fanta knockoffs I personally much prefer to actual Fanta, the lemon one on particular is much stronger (which I guess depends how much you like the taste of lemon)

The Jaffa Cakes are just sheer disappointment though

  7. People saying it’s a Madri knockoff are wrong as this beer clearly states it is actually Spanish lager

  8. The Lidl “Italian lager” is really good, and a clear knock-off of Birra Moretti.

I’ve not tried their obvious Doom Bar knock-off, Shark Bay.

  9. Aldis Jaffa cakes

Now I may be biased as I’m allergic to oranges so don’t eat the actual ones

But the cherry Bakewell ones *chef kiss*

  10. Aldi’s heinz tomato soup and heinz ketchup, Aldi’s chocolate oaties, Aldi’s knockoff snickers, Aldi’s knockoff lemon fanta, Aldi’s knockoff nutella, Lidl’s Hellmans mayo, Lidl’s jaffa cake knockoffs.

Both of their Lurpak knockoffs as well.

Honestly most of their alternatives are either as good or better. The niknak knockoffs were pretty atrocious tho.

  11. I find Lidl’s Patronus wheat beer really nice, especially for the price. I think the label design is “inspired” by Franziskaner.

  12. I LOVE their marmite substitutes. Runnier sos i can put it in a sneezy bottle

  13. For fun little date ideas we’ve been doing blind taste tests.

Jaffa Cakes we ranked Aldi highest, Waitrose lowest

We ranked Aldi better than the originals, better value per jaffa as well

    Other tests we have done:

Custard Creams we ranked Co-op highest, Aldi Lowest

Lightly salted Doritos we ranked Sainsbury’s highest, Doritos lowest

Mini eggs we ranked Cadburys highest, Lidl lowest

Future plans are for wine gums, chocolate digestives & hummus. Future shops we’ll end up in seven places to get all our favourites

  14. The Aldi “Rheinbacher Weissbier”. What a fantastic Weissbier. Truly a great drink.

  15. I’m here to say that Lidl “Oreo’s” are better than real Oreo’s!!

  16. Not tried it but I imagine its better if only because the guy on the real Madri logo looks like he spikes lasses drinks

  17. As a bloke, I can’t really comment on the quality, but I truly LOVE the name that Lidl has given its panty liners. They are called Siempre, which is Spanish for Always…

For my fellow Spanish language students, see how many Spanish words you can find in Lidl, there’s quite a few 😉

  18. Lidl’s Abrachan whiskey was very highly rated in a blind taste test at a very posh whiskey competition, a few years ago.

Wasn’t just generally generic, available whiskeys either, it was entered into a catagory where the price tags were in the several hundreds of pounds. A lot of red faces all around by all accounts.
    I’m imagining a scene from Fraser…

  19. Can’t recall if its Lidl or Aldi that stock it but Professor Peppy is my favourite knock off name and its also really nice, definitely gives Dr Pepper a run for its money.

  20. Aldi takeaway Garlic dip actually is the dominos dip because they both got recalled at the same time for the same reason.  Also Aldi jammy wagon wheels taste identical to the real thing I suspect they are the same.

  21. Often it’s made by the company they are ripping off.

I used to work for a company that made a particular product. We got approached by Aldi saying that they wanted to make a version of our product, and they wanted to see if we would be willing to produce it for them.

It’s clever. Give the original brand first dibs, and tell them you’ll go somewhere else to make it if they don’t want to do it.

Ultimately the extra sales are a big benefit, as the Aldi shoppers aren’t generally taking away your core clientele anyway. And this way you get to control the quality of the product that is trying to be your brand.

So we tweaked the recipe a little and sold into Aldi under their own brand.

    Very good approach I think!
