The Heart of Moldova Party mounted a protest in front of the Parliament Building and demanded that the five new judges, instead of those who terms expire soon, should be selected from among candidates who are not affiliated with the ruling party. The participants said they want to protect the citizens’ right to fair and free elections and prevent “the usurpation of power through a controlled Constitutional Court,” IPN reports.
During the demonstration, the party presented six candidates that it considers worthy of the position of judge: Andrei Nastase, Vlad Batrincea, Alina Rusu, Gheorghe Gonta, Nicolae Esanu and Gaik Vartanean.
“The PAS understands that it cannot win the fair elections. That’s why it relies not on the law, but on falsifications. Their main instrument is the ‘pocket’ Constitutional Court,” said Vitalie Blanari, leader of the Heart of Moldova’s local office in Falesti.
“We see how the “yellows” turn the CC into a branch of their party. The Court, which should be the guarantor of the law, turns it into the guarantor of forgeries! We will not remain silent! We ask the Parliament to appoint new judges who will serve the entire society,” said Olga Gorban, secretary of the Heart of Moldova Party’s office in Cimislia.
“The PAS intends to rig the elections and, through the hands of the Constitutional Court, wants to legalize this deception. They are ready to follow the scenario of Romania, where the Constitutional Court practically annulled democracy,” said Sergei Butuc, leader of the Heart of Moldova’s office in Cantemir.
Lilia Cazac, the leader of the party’s local organization in Dubasari, urged the PAS MPs to think about their future after the September 28 elections: “Sandu will get rid of you – you are used material for her. But you have a chance – to do the first truly dignified deed and form an independent Constitutional Court, which will serve the people, not the party,” said Lilia Cazac
At the end of the protest, the party’s representatives urged the PAS MPs to do “the first dignified deed” and to choose an independent composition of the Constitutional Court. They also called on the opposition parliamentarians to support the fight for the citizens’ right to fair elections.
At the end of July, the term of Sergei Turcan, appointed by the SCM, expires. The terms of office of Domnica Manole and Vladimir Turcan, appointed by the Parliament, and of Liuba Sova and Nicolae Rosca, appointed by the Government, expire in August.
