The Italian Navy’s training ship, Amerigo Vespucci, completed a 20-month World Tour in 2025, visiting 30 countries and 35 ports across five continents. Following this tour, it embarked on a Mediterranean Tour in 2025, visiting 14 ports in Italy. The ship’s world tour, which began in 2023, involved a 20-month circumnavigation, covering over 46,000 nautical miles. Named after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci (1454 – 1512), he was the first to recognise that the lands discovered by Columbus in 1492 and others were a new continent, separate from Asia. The Amerigo Vespucci is primarily used for training Naval Academy cadets, teaching them seamanship, navigation, and other essential skills. It also serves as a diplomatic and cultural ambassador for Italy which is also a renowned training ship, nicknamed ‘Queen of the Seas’. Known for its elegant design and historic significance, she was launched in 1931 and has a crew of 270, plus up to 150 cadets.

The promotional tour included stops in France, Spain, Dakar in Senegal, Santo Domingo, Brazil, Buenos Aires and various destinations in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. The tour aimed to promote Italian culture and excellence while also providing training for Naval Academy cadets. The Mediterranean Tour, which began in 2025, is a 14-stop voyage within Italy. The ship is accompanied by ‘Villaggio IN Italia’ (Village IN Italy), a traveling exhibition showcasing Italian culture, design, style and innovation.

This numismatic innovation celebrates the conclusion of the world tour of the legendary Amerigo Vespucci, ambassador of Italian maritime excellence. Designed by Emanuel Ferretti, the innovative shape with its open centre can accommodate this year’s 2 euro coin released earlier which commemorated the end of the Vespucci’s voyage. The obverse side of the 2 Euro coin depicts the training ship in all its splendour, amplifying the message of tradition and innovation.

The obverse side of the ring coin features a graphic representation of a compass with the cardinal points surrounding the open centre that characterises the coin and displays the degrees. Above and along the rim is the text REPUBBLICA ITALIANA and below along the rim is the inscription NON CHI COMINCIA MA QUEL CHE PERSEVERA (not he who begins but he who perseveres) the motto of the training ship. The reverse side includes a representation of the globe with parallels and meridians. Above the centre is the year 2023 and below the year of issue 2025, the start and end years of the world tour. The mintmark R deoting the Mint of Rome is shown just under the year of issue. To the right of the centre is the denomination 10 EURO and 2025, the year of issue. Along the lower right rim is the text E.FERRETTI, the name of the coin’s designer.
