Considering a leader of one of our political parties was placed under RCMP protection due to threats from an external actor and there have been sectarian incidents enflamed by Hindutva, I agree..
Support for Khalistan & Kashmir independence in the West has always baffled me. If India’s democratic credentials are back sliding because of ‘Hindu Nationalism’ and it must revert back to its secular roots, how is carving up two new ethno-religious states from it a good thing ? More so considering the track record in secularism & human rights of states formed via two such prior adventures.
India & Canada need to put this whole Khalistan thing aside and focus on trade / co-operation, especially in a world where US foreign policy is running around like a headless chicken.
Hopefully Carney is smart enough to invite Modi and no commit a really stupid geopolitical move just for vote bank politics and appeasement.
Canada needs better relations with India if we’re serious about going forward with a decoupling from the US and continued hostility towards China’s
The idea that Canada should have souring relations with the US, bad relations with China & also bad relations with India is genuinely just bad international relations. Hopefully my country wakes up a bit and starts playing smart for a change.
We do well when it comes to foreign policy in Europe but the moment it goes beyond that suddenly we forget what strategy is
I don’t know why Modi should be there anyway, India is not in G7.
Nevertheless, be interesting to see what happens on these lines. I am aware India has been attending G7 meetings, but that doesn’t mean he must be invited every year.
This is more of an internal conflict than some Khalistan or Kashmir thing.
Canada has many Indian communities, they want to be the ones that the government turns an ear to when dealing with their country. So one group is for modi, the other isn’t. A play has been made and we’ll see if it results in anything.
Now these tactics might have worked for long term political candidates. But with Carney being fresh and in his first 100 days, he’s more about presenting results to the Canadian people rather than worry about which Indian community supports him.
We’re very likely to see this meeting go through, and Canada will want mutually economic relations with the condition of lessening indias support for Russia to spin it off as a step to end the war in Ukraine.
The strong reduction in international students and people sent back to India to wait for their paperwork to renew/clear rather than wait in Canada is also likely to be discussed. I don’t know how that one will result.
He’s the leader of one of the more powerful countries on the planet and Canada needs to repair their relationship. The feelings of a religious group cannot override that.
Huh. That’s weird. I wouldn’t have thought that you got to control who attended a meeting of a “club” you were in just because you were providing the venue.
I’m not being sarcastic or anything, and given that it’s not the sort of thing any major news site would be likely to be wrong about, I accept that that’s how it works. I’m just sincerely *surprised* that that’s how it works.
Why does India even go to the G7, though? I don’t think it should even be going to it. Pointless organisation that is gradually losing power.
