Watching Katrina and the Waves ‘Walking on Sunshine’ video from ?1985? and at the 1 min 50 sec mark they’re walking around Tower Bridge. It looks like they didn’t have tourist in them days, no walls or fences to stop you falling in the Thames..

  1. Back in the good ‘ol days when you could fall and drown like a real man. None of this woke trying to keep people safe

  2. Because back then if you fell into the river it was your own silly fault.

  3. That whole southbank area was only really developed in the late 90s. There was no footpath along the river and still a strong post industrial vibe. Some of those hideous 80s yuppy apartment blocks were actually pretty pioneering.

  4. Anyone know which wharf building they were in? That looks like Shad Thames as well, before it was all gentrified and glammed-up for the tourists.

  5. it could have been super early in the morning – if they shot in summer. I used to work near Tower Bridge and its deserted if you go early. Especially on weekends.

What is interesting to me is that the fancy wall along the river’s edge isn’t there at that point. it looks like a regular dock. There’s an episode of the Professionals (70s cop show) with lots of hilarious shots of London including one chase sequence along what is now the South Bank. Its unrecognisable.

  6. also, I have only just now realised that Katrina and the Waves weren’t American. (I’m Australian). Was also flabbergasted to discover Kim Wilde’s nationality.

  7. BiL works in film. He was on the Millennium bridge recently. They shoot over night. They did close the bridge too though

  8. Thank God it’s so much nicer now. Feels very industrial in this video. You don’t actually get that many tourists when you go towards Wapping and you can still get into the beach section.

  9. The churchyard where the band are sitting on the large tomb is St John’s Churchyard in Wapping. The church itself featured in the Friends episode “The One With Ross’s Wedding”.

Another stark example of gentrification is The Turks Head pub next door to St John’s which features as a derelict shell in Morrissey’s “We hate it when our friends become successful” video, it’s now a swanky bistro
