Hamas responded to US special envoy Steve Witkoff’s latest proposal for a hostage and ceasefire deal in Gaza with amendments and demands, leading the mediator to blast the stance as one that is “totally unacceptable and only takes us backward.”
This comes after President Trump expressed optimism on Friday about the chances of getting a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza soon and stressed that both sides “want to get out of this mess.”
Israeli officials echoed Witkoff’s line, with the Prime Minister’s office releasing a statement blasting Hamas for its “intransigence,” and saying Israel would continue working toward returning its hostages and defeating Hamas.
The U.S., Egypt and Qatar are all pressing Hamas to revise its response, agree to Witkoff’s proposal and start negotiations on the final details of the deal, sources said.
