The City of Chattanooga’s Public Works Department has introduced Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks to its fleet.
CNG vehicles, according to the US Department of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), operate similarly to regular gas powered vehicles. Their engines function in the same way, except its compressed, natural gas that’s stored in the fuel tank, typically in the back of the truck.
“The introduction of CNG trucks is a testament to our continuous pursuit of innovation in public service,” said Jerramy Wood, Public Works Administrator. “We are not only investing in a cleaner future for Chattanooga but also setting a new standard for how municipal operations can be both environmentally responsible and fiscally prudent.”
The new trucks present a myriad of benefits for Chattanooga, including:
Cleaner airCNG combustion produces less harmful emissions, such as greenhouse gases and nitrogen oxides, compared to gasoline or diesel.Cost savingsCNG is less expensive than other fuels, creating significant cost savings over the vehicles’ lifespans and enhancing energy independence.SafetyCNG is considered a safe fuel with an excellent record due to its ability to dissipate quickly into the atmosphere in the event of a leak, reducing the risk of explosion.

Additionally, modern equipment and systems allow the department to do more work in less time, improving both the quality and efficiency of Chattanooga’s public services.
“The City of Chattanooga’s Department of Public Works remains dedicated to exploring and implementing advancements that contribute to a more sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective future for the community,” says the city. “The new CNG trucks are a visible sign of this ongoing commitment.”
