Israel attorney general says PM’s nomination for Shin Bet chief ‘illegal’ • FRANCE 24 English

Benjamin Netanyahu wants David Zeni appointed as soon as possible, but installing him as the new head of the Shinbet Security Service is not set to be easy. According to Israel’s Attorney General, it would be unlawful. As she said in a letter to Netanyahu, your decision regarding Major General Zini made in a situation of conflict of interest and contradicting the conclusions of the judgment as well as the judicial directives and force is illegitimate and illegal. It comes after months of political wrangling over Netanyahu’s move to dismiss the outgoing Shinbet chief Ronan Bar. The prime minister said in March that he was firing Bar because of an ongoing lack of trust. It prompted Israelis to take to the streets in protest accusing Netanyahu of undermining democracy. Critics said the real reason for Bar’s dismissal was an investigation by Shinbet into possible financial ties between close aids of Netanyahu and Qatar. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled that Bar’s dismissal was illegal, but he had already announced he would step down in June. Following the court’s ruling, the attorney general told the prime minister to refrain from naming a new head of Shinbet. But Netanyahu did it anyway. According to one Israeli media, Zini, a former army general, previously told IDF colleagues that he was against hostage deals and that the war against Hamas was eternal. The report has sparked outrage among families of captives held in Gaza. Netanyahu now has three weeks to have Zeni’s appointment confirmed by the government, but the Supreme Court ruling, the attorney general’s instructions, and several other legal obstacles could make it difficult to get him over the line by then or at

  1. Israel prevails in wars even when outnumbered, a testament to its military prowess. As the army of the God of hosts, Israel is advocating for the implementation of the Geneva Convention to facilitate the safe evacuation of Palestinians from the war zone in Gaza, which Hamas initiated on October 7. Allowing the civilian population to leave would enable Israel to target Hamas more effectively. Despite the international community's panic-driven calls for a two-state solution, Israel should remain resolute. The world recognizes that Hamas's days are numbered, and its demise is imminent. It's worth noting that Hamas has become a lucrative industry for some, exploiting aid for personal gain. Wise nations stand in solidarity with Israel."
