It may not have a reputation as a party town in the international LGBTIQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Questioning/Queer) community, but Luxembourg has a niche and vibrant scene.

Luxembourg also legalised same sex civil union in 2004, and same sex marriage on 18 June 2014.

However the country slid from third to tenth place in the Rainbow Europe Index, since 2021, although it remains considerably higher on most areas of the survey compared to other EU countries.

The Rainbow Centre in the city has worked hard to put together a calendar of regular listings from Queer Afterwork and Queer Choir, to regular exhibitions, panel discussions, workshops and meet-ups.

This article gives details of organisations that support the LGBTIQ+ community in the Grand Duchy, and if you are new to Luxembourg, we list nightlife venues, meet-ups and where to find more events.

LGBTIQ associations and support in Luxembourg

Rosa Lëtzebuerg Association

Founded in 1996, The Rosa Lëtzebuerg Association aims to work for all LGBTIQ+ people in Luxembourg. It defends and promotes LGBTIQ+ rights and equality, fights against discrimination and raises awareness, across the fields of justice, health, social life, education, culture and sport. It welcomes LGBTIQ+ people in Luxembourg and provides socio-family counselling. It also organises some seasonal meet ups and special events.

Rosa Lëtzebuerg has called upon Luxembourg’s government to address five issues. Firstly to find a solution to the stagnation in LGBTIQ+ issues and establish a Ministry of Diversity and Anti-Discrimination. Secondly, to establish an LGBTIQ+ contact point with the police, to help treat queerphobic violence and hate speech sensitively and fairly.

The organisation also wants an end to gender entries on official documents such as ID cards, and a ban on conversion therapies that suppress sexual orientation and gender identity. Finally, they ask for no interventions that are not necessary for life or health without the consent of the person concerned.

Rainbow Centre

This centre, which opened in 2023, is a joint project between Rosa Lëtzebuerg and the government, and provides the LGBTIQ+ community with a safe space but also contributes to queer visibility and culture with exhibitions, roundtable discussions, concerts, workshops and training.
