Watan-British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said on Sunday that the United Kingdom considers Morocco’s proposed autonomy plan as the optimal foundation for resolving the Western Sahara dispute.

Lammy told reporters, following talks with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, that “Morocco’s autonomy initiative represents the most practical, credible, and viable basis for a lasting solution to the conflict.”

Morocco proposes autonomy under its sovereignty as the sole solution to the dispute over the former Spanish colony, which the United Nations classifies as a “non-self-governing territory,” while the Algeria-backed Polisario Front demands full independence.
