>A new poll suggests that Nigel Farage becoming prime minister could push support for Scottish independence to 58%.
>**The survey by Norstat for the Sunday Times, which spoke to 1,007 Scots between May 27 and May 30, showed support for separation currently sits at 54% in Scotland.**
>However, if Reform UK were to win the next general election, that figure could reach 60%, and some believe it should be the tipping point for another referendum.
The Times original report: [Spectre of Nigel Farage at No 10 fuels support for independence](https://archive.ph/cr2Zp)
Not suprising
Doesn’t really matter since we aren’t in a union of equals and won’t be allowed to have a referendum, erosion of democracy would be items 1,2 and 3 on his agenda.
What would seal it is if Holyrood can start showing the competence Salmond’s government did between 2007 and 2014 nothing outrageous, just quietly and calmly tackling issues.
I mean they were far from perfect but they certainly made Westminster look like a shit show in comparison and Keir’s current government seem to follow one policy disaster with another. I can’t imagine the Russian shill from Reform will be any better.
We were told that the Tories would do this. We were told that Boris as PM would do this.
We’ve had all sorts of scenarios that will allegedly push people to independence, but if and when they happen the barometer barely budges, and it’s not sustained.
And this is before the simple fact that PM Farage will only act to repeal power from Scotland into his own grubby little mitts. You can support it all you want, but it won’t happen with Farage in charge.
Recent polling in Scotland also showed that the popularity of the SNP is barely moving, whilst Reform is booming.
Interestingly, these voters seem to be coming from Labour, not the Tories, who are consistent on their performance too.
What’s the point in posting these utterly meaningless polls. The next general election is four years away.
I don’t know why anyone on the pro-independence side would expect Farage as PM to be a catalyst. 14 years of one of the most car crash Conservative governments and PMs in memory hasn’t moved the needle. Its almost like the voting reasons for Scottish Independence are bigger than just what happens in Westminster.
Wouldn’t matter if indy support was 99.999%, Farage would never allow a vote.
Remember, Holyrood has no competency to hold a referendum; only Westminster has that power and they need to grant it (via Section 30) for Holyrood to hold an (advisory!) referendum.
So when/if Farage take power in 2029, you’re no looking at around 2035 before there is a whiff of a chance. Unless he gets a second term, then push that out to around 2039.
I think the SNP/S.Greens need to dial down the constant “Indy is awesome, it will be easy” and “Anything Westminster does is _bad_”, stop being distracted, and just quietly get on with being good for Scotland (within the limits of their powers).
It happened prior to 2014, it can happen again.
Nice to know but given the UK Gov will never allow another vote, we’re trapped 🤷♂️
I want independence but not at the expense of this idiot being in charge! He would ruin us and the rest of the UK and as much as we would be independent we also share a border with England
Is this the bit where peeps vote for that guy like they did for BREXIT because they think it will force an independence vote?
Because that guy ain’t going to give you jack doodle.
Support or lack of support based on the government of the day is a careless way to plan for the future.
Is this the new “we just need to wait for all of the old people to die” message?
Farage would not be an issue if the UK media had not spent a decade or so normalising him and his right wing views to the point where they are now treated as a genuine and sensible choice for the electorate instead of ridiculing him and pointing out constantly the reality which is just how bigoted and batshit insane him and his party are.
Polls said the same thing about a hard brexit but that never materialised. I’d love if all this shit did lead to support for independence but I’ll have to doubt it until it happens.
This is all well and good but Labour, Tories and Reform – whoever leads this or the next UK government – have the power to deny Scotland another referendum forever.
Thanks to that Supreme Court ruling, Scotland is effectively trapped in the UK. We can’t leave even if we want to at 99% Yes.
This is simply not acceptable if you have any respect for democracy, as Farage, Starmer, Labour and all Tories don’t
Interesting that support is already at 54% – even without considering Frogface as PM.
I mind they said that about Boris becoming PM
The yoons are as yoony as the indys are indy.
The people and the politics don’t matter much. There’s a tiny amount of undecideds but as we can see 40% would still be yoons if it meant outright fascism.
Looks like we are going to find out
Classic fridge magnet Scottish journalism. Something that’s hasn’t and might never happen might have an enormous effect on support for an independence referendum which there are absolutely so plans to happen based on a (no doubt) loaded question in an opinion poll requested by (insert pro independence group). Still at least it’s THE other distracting piece of fucking news other than where people can piss or shite in the Holyrood parliament building.
Even if support did go over 60, which I really hope it does, this lot will just find another ‘now is not the time’ism’ to kick the can down the road.
We’ve heard a lot of noise now about how the polls need to be at a certain level and consistently blah blah blah before the issue is revisited. For an example of that in the current situation, see Brexit. Polls have been consistent for years now but the major Parties will not go near it.
I consider myself british and Scottish, id prefer to remain but if the rest of the UK do in fact want this clown id vote for independence. I know several scots who think this man is a hero and all of them are the most bigoted, uneducated, uncouth folk going.
do it England you cowards
The English government is already refusing to let Scotland vote in a new independence referendum.
I find it hard to believe that EngTrump will allow it.
If Farage does become PM he would never allow a referendum.
Hard to believe this complete arsehole is anywhere near power.
It could push support to over 90% and still not happen.
We forgetting that we’d have to get permission from him as PM for another referendum, aye? Snowballs chance in hell of that happening.
No. There would be pushing, yes. The country, into the abyss.
Well, well… Nigel Farage… engineered Brexit could now give us Exit…🏴👋👋👋
Set England free…..😂😂😂
Brexit was and continues to be an Utter Shitshow that benifited ZERO people apart from the billionaire Fash’s who wanted it
So if we could just do good things that help us without the “Lessons have to be learned” part, that would be amazing Thanks!
We’ll never be allowed to vote again. We fucked it.
I’d bet it’d be 100% the guys a fucking joke. The kinda guy to piss in your pocket and tell you it’s raining.
60% – thought it would be closer to 95%
Not much of a boost then
Ehhhhh I think a far right government like Reform would make independence pretty much violent or impossible
