  1. The UK will boost its submarine fleet with plans to build up to 12 new [nuclear-powered attack boats](https://inews.co.uk/topic/submarines?srsltid=AfmBOoohZc4Gqc7DGUYhCaPrGe4hohR2S6cwhgvE7QI2gH71scBPQ7mS&ico=in-line_link) as the country moves to “warfighting readiness”, [Sir Keir Starmer](https://inews.co.uk/topic/sir-keir-starmer?srsltid=AfmBOooMYa4OpCa_mTpj82VCDbbM0YlM-lRBpKpG5wyfSIi4vF3s6xEA&ico=in-line_link) will announce today.

The increase in state-of-the-art attack submarines forms part of the Government’s highly anticipated [Strategic Defence Review,](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/army-cyber-hackers-fight-drones-battlefield-warfare-3723654?ico=in-line_link) which ministers said will send a “message to Moscow” in the face of mounting aggression from the Kremlin.

It comes alongside a renewed commitment to deliver the fleet of Dreadnought nuclear-armed submarines, with a £15bn investment into the sovereign warhead programme over this parliament, which will ensure the UK maintains its continuous at-sea deterrent.

In response to the review, the Government will make a “landmark shift” in the UK’s approach to deterrence and defence, moving the country to warfighting readiness in order to deter threats and strengthen security in the Euro-Atlantic region.

It include a major increase in munitions stockpiles and support equipment, to ensure the country is better prepared for crises or all out war. As part of this, up to 7,000 UK-built long-range weapons will be purchased, supporting 800 defence jobs.

From the late 2030s, the UK will dramatically scale up its submarine fleet, building one new nuclear-powered boat every 18 months at BAE’s Barrow shipyard and Rolls-Royce’s Raynesway site in Derby. The new SSN-AUKUS fleet will from the late 2030s replace the UK’s seven Astute Class attack submarines.

An MoD source said the “drumbeat” of 18-month turnaround times for new submarines represented an “unprecedented rate” in the modern era and would be a “huge investment in the infrastructure that is needed at Barrow and at Derby”.

  2. Will Putin be phased by this seeing the mess that the uk is in at the moment?

  3. I don’t think 12 new submarines would scare Russia a single bit.

Russia is a massive country and has substantially more nuclear weapons than us, they also have a much larger fleet of military vehicles.

I think it’s a step in the right direction for the UK and defence, but plenty still needs to be done.

Even if these submarines are nuclear powered, nuclear weapons are not what we see in the movies, It’ll likely take a lot more than 12 submarines to scare.

  4. And in the same breath, the 3% defense budget proposal, is just that, a proposal. All this is smoke and mirrors. I will eat my own bum if we build 12.

  5. >

    > shift the UK to a “whole of society approach” to warfare, which he said would be a “step towards national service potentially being on the way”.

It’s about time national service was introduced, it should have never ended

  6. I hate headlines like this so much. Just say Starmer plans to build 12 new subs without adding your stupid little putin twist on it.

  7. Putin is going to be pushing up daisies by the time the first of these is delivered.

Glad we are doing it as it signals intent and our long term commitment to the military.

  8. No no no. Britain says it will build “up to 12” submarines. The revealing phrase is “up to” and they don’t exist yet. Let’s get it straight.

  9. More sabre rattling.
“We must show them we are ready”
The BEF Mk3 oiled & ready to go just like 1914, 1939.

Am I going to get an Anderson Shelter to put in my garden or is this War we are gearing towards going to be in someone else’s backyard?

  10. Why even bother?

At the next election, Farage will be Prime Minister, and Russia will be hailed as our closest ally.

  11. Well the Russian bots don’t like it. It must be a good thing then

  12. Right we wont have these until mid 2030s, they won’t build 12, we will be lucky to get 8. Putin has other things on his mind rather than the hypothetical 12 (yeah right) we may or may not have by 2035, let’s face it, we will only get 8 and the will be late. Probably fitted for but not with all the expensive stuff.

  13. Keir Starmer needs to send a sense of terror through the spine of Putin by telling him “I’m putting you on notice”.

  14. Up to 12 more on top of the 6, soon 7 that we currently have is quite a lot of subs isn’t it? I wonder what led to them deciding to spend the military budget this way. I would’ve thought there were more pressing updates necessary elsewhere (not that I can think of any off the top my head).
