The European Union will closely collaborate with the authorities in Chișinău to implement priority reforms in justice and combating corruption, and the Roadmap on the Rule of Law is a crucial reference point in this process. This was stated by the new European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath, during his first official visit to the Republic of Moldova, as reported by IPN.
“Moldova will not be alone on the path to joining the EU. We will be with you every step of the way. We have already offered our support and more assistance is on the way. Our experts are here, working hand in hand to ensure fair elections, and to fight against foreign interference,” stated Michael McGrath during a press conference held together with Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.
According to the official, the European Commission eagerly awaits the opening of negotiations on various clusters, as soon as Moldova meets the necessary criteria. “Together, we will diligently implement the roadmap for justice and anti-corruption reforms that must be fulfilled in order to ensure Moldova’s accession to the EU,” stated the European Commissioner.
In turn, the Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, stated that during the discussions, the priority measures for the justice sector were highlighted, promoted in order to respond to both the expectations of citizens and the commitments towards the European Union. Additionally, the processes regarding the transposition of EU acquis, legislative adjustments, and strengthening of institutions in the sector were also addressed.
“We remain dedicated with the same perseverance and understanding that a deep reform of the justice system must be treated with great care and patience, in order to generate trust, transparency and stability,” said the Minister of Justice.
European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath, is on an official visit to Chisinau on June 5-6.
