Should I be worried or is it scaremongering l?

  1. They don’t even know your name “Legal Occupier”

    They’re full of shit.

  2. There’s no investigation, it’s all carefully worded to make it seem like you’re getting a targeted, formal investigation when actually they’re just sending letters to every residential address that doesn’t have a tv licence.

Feel free to ignore it. They may, and I stress may, send somebody to your house. You don’t need to open the door to them, you don’t need to let them in, just ignore them or say you don’t need a tv licence.

If you’d like to stop the letters, you can go online and fill out the declaration that you don’t need a licence but they’ll just start sending letters again in about six months.

  3. The letters get more and more aggressive then start again at the beginning.

Assuming you don’t need a licence just bin it. Any communication will just encourage them.

  4. Definitely scaremongering. We’ve had about 50 letters in the last year. Just throw them away and if they visit you either don’t answer your door or don’t let them in, they can’t force entry. We don’t have a tv but we still wouldn’t let them in because having a smartphone is enough evidence for them to take you to court. Just ignore them, there’s not much they can do if you don’t let them in.

    Dinnae talk piss Scott Robson.

  6. They really are comically inept. You’ll get another forty of these letters: some in red, some in bold, some with STERN WORDING, some polite, some threatening, some with fake ‘case numbers’ on them.

There’s literally nothing they can do to enforce them unless they happen to come to your house, you invite them in, and admit that you use BBC services or watch live television.

  7. If you don’t watch TV, why would you not just fill in the bit on the website to let them know?

  8. I’ve always wondered why it became law that we had to tell them we Don’t Need a licence. I had a TV inspector at my door saying it was law that I had to declare I didn’t need one, I just don’t get that, I don’t have to do it with a driver’s licence, which is way more important than a TV licence, so why do they gotta be like that?

  9. You’re fine.

I have never paid (or needed to) for a tv licence and I get these constantly.

Never in my adult life have I seen them make good on their threats.

    Bin it and relax!

  10. Note: the “officers” are typically semi retired men, they have no authority to enforce or enter into your property.

Additionally the most important part of this letter is the short sentence after **The Law**

“It’s a criminal offence to watch or record live tv without a license.”

This is confirmation that a TV Licence has nothing to do with TV ownership, it’s solely for broadcast only.

  11. I’ve been getting one of these or something similar every month for the past decade. They’re printed and mailed out by machine and they’re on a cycle. Don’t pay long enough and you’ll see the same letter come round again. It’s all bullshit.

    So no need to worry.

  12. You gotta love the boomer stamp in the corner “ENFORCEMENT VISIT APPROVED”

  13. Racketeering behaviour. Can’t think how much stress a letter like that must cause the vulnerable and elderly.

  14. Scaremongering. Recently saw a letter in the pigeonhole, addressed to the Legal Occupier of Flat C Kitchen. Obviously, no human concluded that the kitchen was a legitimate domestic address

  15. That Scott Robson is the regional manager of a lot of places….

Either he’s overworked or is fictional….

  16. If you don’t watch live tv or use iplayer then you are in the clear.

Assuming you don’t do any of the above then if they do chap your door this is how to approach them……

Inspector – “can I speak to the occupier of the house?”
    You – “what’s it regarding?”
Inspector – “I’m from tv licensing”
You – “sorry not interested, goodbye”
    Close door

    Don’t ever:

    1. Give your personal details to them
    2. Don’t answer questions as you ain’t legally obliged to answer
    3. Don’t ever let them enter your home

  17. Had 2 men appear at my door last week in Scotland. Only seen them through doorbell as I am in england on holiday. Quite cunning I thought as they both had badges with North Lanarkshire council emlazoned on them which make it appear that they are from the council and acting on council business.
Told them I still don’t have one just like the last time they came and just like i told them on the online form/disclaimer that they ask you to fill in. Seems like it all falls on deaf ears. I am not overly bothered, It’s their time and money they are wasting.

  18. I put these letters in the same place I put the letters from the solicitors for overstaying at Tesco Silverburn car park… in the bin.

  19. Ignore them – they’re no more than salesmen, with no legal rights whatever. They cannot enter any premises without a warrant or UNLESS invited in.
NEVER allow them in without a legally signed warrant. To obtain one, they need evidence of live tv or iPlayer being or having been watched.
Ignore their letters and if they come to your home, simply close the door. End of transaction.

I can only imagine what sort of employment history and sense of morality the people doing this risible non-job must have (if any).

  20. If you’re om the electoral register then they haven’t even investigated that to find out your name. As long as you’re not watching live TV or BBC iplayer then you’re all good legally. It is on them to prove you’re watching TV, you don’t need to talk to them or let them into your home.

  21. You did the correct thing by starting to tear it up for the recycling. TV license reminders are currently the biggest threat to global warming.

  22. The BBC has a unionist bias. It isn’t moral to expect anyone to pay for opposing propaganda.

  23. i’ve had about 40 of these over the last 4 years.

  24. It is a load of shite, bin it and keep going with your life.

  25. Nothing to worry about mate, just stick it in the bin. As for the letter I just want to know how on Earth you opened the envelope.

  26. Iv been receiving these for 7 years they got more aggressive until they revert back to stage 1 and the cycle repeats , scott robson seems to be the regional manager in many regions too lol

  27. They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this nonsense.

  28. There’s been an “investigation” at my address since 2019, and nobody has ever turned up at my door.

    100% Scaremongering

  29. Just live somewhere that somehow they have two addresses for the same property! Ground Right and Flat B. Which probably means even if I bothered buying for one, they’d still send letters to me anyway…

They’re incompetent. Ignore the letters for years, and never even a knock at the door.
