PORTLAND (WGME) — Maine Governor Janet Mills emphasized the importance of the state’s relationship with Canada amid President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade war at the Governor’s International Breakfast in Portland Monday.
Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods earlier this year, claiming the U.S. does not need anything from Canada.
Canada is Maine’s largest trading partner, with businesses and people across the state relying on Canada and Canadians for goods, energy and tourism.
“While we can’t reverse this economic uncertainty coming from the nation’s capital, we can convey to our neighbors that they are welcome here and we need their presence in our state,” Mills said. “It’s the least we can do.”
