  1. A senior Nato official who was once Britain’s top military figure in the alliance has issued the starkest warning yet that Russia may look to launch an attack on Europe within the next three years.

On Monday, Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Vladimir Putin may look to launch an attack on the alliance within five years. However, speaking to *The i Paper*, Sir James Everard, Nato’s former deputy supreme allied commander Europe, said he feared the Russian leader might move earlier.

Sir James, a current senior adviser to the alliance, went further than Rutte and said: “If Russia gets unstoppable momentum in Ukraine why wait three to five years as Nato grows stronger? For a land grab Putin could go early.”

Asked why Rutte indicated Russia’s readiness to attack would be further down the line, Sir James who advises Nato commanders as they prepare for operations, replied: “You can apply a timeline for a Russian attack based on any number of metrics.

“I think the Nato Secretary General has pitched his three-to-five-year timeline perfectly: not distant because it would be ignored, not immediate because this makes life too difficult for Western leaders, but close enough that we have to do something now because a Russian threat is very real.”

In his speech, Rutte outlined the need to “make our alliance stronger, fairer and more lethal” in order to defend against Russia’s capacity to rearm and threaten alliance countries in the near future.

He said: “Let’s not kid ourselves, we are all on the Eastern flank now. The new generation of Russian missiles travel at many times the speed of sound. The distance between European capitals is only a matter of minutes. There is no longer East or West – there is just Nato.”

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, responded to his remarks by saying that Nato “is demonstrating itself as an instrument of aggression and confrontation”.

  2. Either Russia has been massively weakened by the Ukraine war or its strong enough to fight a war with NATO, you can’t have both.

  3. Would they really want to do that considering they haven’t been able to win a war with their neighboring Ukraine in over 2 years?

  4. Ah yes, our weekly “the Russians are gonna attack ASAP!” Article we’ve been seeing since 2022

  5. We’ve been hearing this same spiel every other month since the war fired up again.

  6. When will we stop listening to the Ukraine propaganda? Russia is a serious threat. They produce at least 400 new BMP-3s and 400 BTR-82s per year, plus a few hundred of other IFVs, at least 100 new T-90Ms, they have restarted the production of new T-80s.

Russia is also producing about 750 ballistic Iskander-Ms per year, about 600 cruise Kh-101s, about 500 cruise Kalibrs.

In artillery ammo it outproduces the entire West.

In modern aircraft it produces a comfortable surplus over its losses in Ukraine. Ditto in naval ships.

Additionally, it increased the drone production from several thousand per year in 2022 to several million now. The Shahed/Gerans strategic-range kamikaze drones alone are expected to reach a production rate of 60,000-70,000 per year very soon. They launched mass production of fiber-optic drones that Ukraine and the West are struggling to catch up to.

Their recruitment rate (exclusively volunteers) is outstripping their battlefield losses, they generate new units all the time. The benefit from having 400,000-500,000 war veterans in their army is difficult to estimate, but certainly significant.

Doesn’t sound weak to me. If the war stops now Russia will build even more massive stockpiles

  7. They are still involved in Ukraine at the moment. People project Russia to be whatever they want it to be.

To paraphrase a famous US Grant quote, some worry that Russia will do multiple maneuvers that contradict itself instead of worrying what the planners themselves will do. Grant hated the fear of the enemy because it prevented them from planning actions that they can control.

  8. HOW? WHERE? HOW? From Kyiv will fall in three days they’ve gone to taking three years struggling for just a portion of the country . There’s no way they can take anything else

Poland would absolutely cut them to pieces at this point, Finland would just be a repeat of the winter war and nobody wants that. The only semi feasible target is the baltics but even they’re fairly well prepared for it. And if anyone here thinks There’s a chance Russian soldiers will ever reach the West I’d just like to say Vlad my boy you’ve got a war to run stop sharing your wet dreams on the internet

The only scenario in which Russia can be a threat now is if America fully flips and commits to Russia against Europe. Which…. OK There’s actually a chance for that

  9. If Russia were to confront the EU, the nation of Russia would cease to exist as we know it. The loss wouldn’t allow them to just crawl back home and lick wounds. There would be major restructuring forced by the entire planet. Putin would be deposed, and most likely executed, and the entire power structure of the nation would be completely rebuilt from the ground up. And, the military would be (rightfully) completely neutered to a point to where they only have basic capabilities to defend their homeland, never to mobilize, en masse, for decades to come.

  10. There is no money for any services, but there will always be money for war.

The enemy is weak but fear

    Because the enemy is strong

Spend money (a.k.a give us money)

  11. Quick question for the community. I’ve also been seeing articles discussing the end of the Putin regime coming soon. Do you think Russia will continue to try to reunite the Soviet nations if Putin is gone?

  12. I am hearing about this 3 year timeline since 2018

  13. schrödinger’s Russia, according to the same set of people, Russia is very weak but also very strong

  14. Pretty soon we’ll be hearing Trump complain that it’s Biden and Europe’s fault that Russia is attacking Europe and Fox News and MAGA followers will be saying Europe is “corrupt” and should have been nicer to Putin.
