Ukrainian diplomats in Belgium visited a teenager suspected of murdering his mother and sister in the city of Haasrode. He is currently held at a temporary detention center for juvenile offenders, while the investigation into the circumstances of this horrific tragedy continues. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
“The detainee’s health condition is satisfactory. All necessary conditions for his stay have been provided. Investigative authorities are establishing the circumstances of the case and possible motives for the act. After the completion of the forensic medical examination, assistance will be provided for the repatriation of the victims’ bodies to Ukraine. The case remains under the supervision of the Embassy of Ukraine in Belgium.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also noted that the Ukrainian embassy maintains contact with the relatives of the victims and the detainee, as well as with the police, prosecution, the management of the penitentiary facility where the teenager is held, and other relevant authorities.
Details of the double murder of Ukrainians in Haasrode
On the morning of June 6, a fire broke out in Haasrode in the house of a priest, which is rented by the municipality to accommodate Ukrainian refugees. Firefighters who arrived at the scene found the bodies of a 46-year-old woman and her 6-year-old daughter. Medical personnel attempted to resuscitate the child, but unfortunately, she died from her injuries.
According to law enforcement, both victims suffered stab wounds. A fire expert believes the fire was deliberately set, indicating the incident was intentional. The prosecution has launched an investigation into the double murder.
On June 8, the Belgian prosecution announced that the 16-year-old son of the deceased confessed to stabbing his mother and sister, as well as setting fire to the house.
The family had been living in Belgium for three years. The deceased woman’s husband is currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
As noted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha instructed the embassy to keep this case under “special supervision.”
