  1. Hey, Welsh people,

Nigel Farage wants to send your children down coal mines so that his wealth increases. Not his kids, obviously.

I have extended family in Wales – all nostalgic about coal mining, not one of them would want to work down there nor send their own kids to work there.

  2. This is all that some politicians seem to think we’re good for. Coal mining, references to Gavin and Stacey, and sheep jokes.

  3. I think it says more about the supposed party of government of Wales that they have a less compelling vision for the left behind parts of Wales than a privately educated English millionaire professional politician whose only ideas are to recycle the failed model of decades ago.

It kind of reminds me of Galaxy Quest, which despite being a parody of Star Trek still ‘got it’ far better than a number of the official releases *cough, Section 31, cough*

  4. After living in oz, I can’t see the issue with mining, it pays really well and brings jobs back to wales

  5. Who are these Welsh people? The do coal mining and rugby right? Meh, that’s enough information. Nigel Farage. Probably.

  6. Yeah, let’s send our children down to die in the mines again, whilst Wales receives little to none of the wealth from said mining. Where have I heard that great idea before….

  7. My 80 year old ex miner father “what a bloody stupid idea, most mines were capped, and we don’t need coal anymore, we need something better!” He also hates Reform and the bile they spew.

I’m the first generation in my family not to work down the mines, and we are all very thankful for that fact. Problem we had in Cymru was when the mines were closed the Tory government didn’t have any plan on what happens next, we were left to rot.

Isn’t Farage a Thatcher fanboy? Tells me all I need to know (that and he’s a bigoted toff who cosplays to attract the ill informed)

  8. One thing that occured to me is that a key part of why these jobs were historically considered ‘good’ is due to unionisation and collective bargaining that was a key feature of what was this dirty, dangerous, tough work.

    Reforms position-

Workers Rights Bill- Reform voted against the bill and keys reforms around zero hours contracts.

Trade Unions- Reform have consistently come out against unions- supporting a “sensible” relationship. What sensible means to them, I think we can largely guess.

Collectivive Bargaining-Reform oppose legislative changes to recognition and bargaining rights.

Do we think Reform are more likely to bring back the jobs of 60s and 70s, if we are being honest, is what people think of when he waffles on about reopening the mines, or, would their version of it be dirty, dangerous and tough jobs with poor pay and no collective bargaining rights? Last I checked, even if we do have some people who look on Wale’s mining past with nostalgia, no one is hankering for the 1800s and early 1900s version of mining jobs, which saw Welsh people exploited?

  9. My dad was a miner before the First World War. He wouldn’t approve.

  10. This just belies Farage’s obvious disconnect with “the common man”. He’s seen that people were upset about Maggie Thatcher closing the pits, so he’s put two and two together and got 5, and said “oh well that means they want the mines reopened”.

No it doesn’t, you prick, it means people want meaningful employment. Maybe in the late 80s people wanted the mines back open, but the mines are basically just a symbol for the death of industry and the subsequent high unemployment and destruction of the communities that relied on it.

But Farage just wants more of the poors to go and fetch coal for him and his rich friends.

  11. Thickos of Wales, this is what you get when you vote in a fascist English nationalist party. They don’t care and will never care about Wales. Once they have your vote they strip away assets and privatise everything for profit. That’s if there’s anything actually left to sell.

  12. Oh, hell no.
Scrapping net zero? Sending people down mines?
This is a huge step back from getting towards safer, greener, cleaner energy.
Not just Wales but all the UK is at real risk if we don’t push towards this, we are an island nation.
I get that people hate the term far right but their policies are dangerous long & short term, we’d be absolutely fucked

  13. Farage is an idiot. The mines are flooded probably machinery thrown down the main shaft and sealed.

It is uneconomic to open them and the skills and experience are long gone.

    Farage is a tool.

  14. Been to a working mine in Bolivia. Life expectancy there is 40 years old
