WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – First Step of Wichita Falls and Sacred Space Counseling Center have partnered to launch a hygiene drive to support survivors in need.
In light of recent funding cuts and dwindling resources, both organizations recognize that many survivors can no longer afford basic hygiene items such as soap, shampoo and sometimes not even toothpaste or a toothbrush.
With support from the community, the organizations believe they can make a real difference.
“Sources of funding are slimmer with a lot of the changes with federal funding, state funding and all of that. We’re really trying to lean on our community,“ First Step of Wichita Falls community educator Kiawa Chambers said.
Both First Step of Wichita Falls and Sacred Space Counseling Center understand the importance of being a supportive and a trusted resource for those they serve.
“A lot of the times when a survivor comes to us, they will come with their children in the clothes on their back. We want to make sure that we are providing them with shampoo, conditioner, soap, I mean all of the essentials, just so that they can, you know, feel better, that they can take a nice warm shower and they have everything that they need,“ Chambers said.
Some survivors also have specific needs and that’s where both organizations come in, bringing something vital to the table.
While the hygiene drive is focused on helping those in crisis, it also serves to raise awareness – not just about the need, but about how others in the community can get involved and help, too.
“I think it gets the word out there about Sacred Space and First Step, which a lot of people might not know about. It helps us share what we do and also share the need that First Step has right now,“ Sacred Space Counseling Center license professional counselor Bayleigh Holley said.
Hygiene donations can be dropped off at the Sacred Space Counseling Center location during their business hours.
