The Moldovan banking sector is well capitalized and resilient, ready to face possible external shocks. The assurances come from the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), Anca Dragu. She highlighted Moldova’s stability, innovation and European path at the Bucharest Leaders’ Summit, a leading forum organized by the MediaUno Press Group, the MediaUno Association, the Department for Sustainable Development and the National Institute of Statistics, IPN reports.

During the round table dedicated to the risks and opportunities in the development of the financial-banking system in the current global context, Anca Dragu emphasized the three essential roles of the BNM: pillar of financial stability, driver of responsible innovation and facilitator of European integration.

Among the recent progress, the governor mentioned the implementation of the MIA instant payment system developed by the BNM. It is used by more than 600 thousand people, registering monthly more than 1 million transactions, with a cumulative value of more than 4.8 billion MDL.

“For the first time, the rate of use of digital payments has exceeded the volume of cash withdrawals from ATMs, a clear signal of changing financial behavior and modernization of the economy”, said Anca Dragu.

She also highlighted that the Republic of Moldova has recently become a member of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and seven out of ten commercial banks in the country have already been accepted for technical interconnection.

In the context of negotiations for accession to the European Union, the BNM has a crucial role to play in three important chapters: Free Movement of Capital, Financial Services and Economic and Monetary Policy. In conclusion, the Governor of the BNM stated that the Republic of Moldova has all the prerequisites to become “Europe’s wonder child” – an ambitious, growing country that is seriously building a European central bank through thought, action and vision.

The round table attended by Anca Dragu took place within the framework of the 29th edition of the national project “Together we protect Romania”, which ran from May 21 to June 16, bringing together over 400 leaders, experts and officials to discuss the sustainable economic future of the region.
