They get really slippery after multiple uses, making them ineffective for throwing
I think these are way more beautiful
The Americans would probably adopt these, make a sport around it with the players wearing some sort of armour, and lots of commercial breaks, and then start calling it football.
No because of too much butt stuff – where do you think the expression “explosive diarrhea” comes from?
Bulky.
I think because they are heavier and bigger than today’s designs
Knowing the Germans, that’s why the WW1 stormtroopers ran like they had something shoved up their ass.
It’s for far more mundane reasons:
* something roughly ball-shaped will roll mostly straight forward after ground impact, anyone who ever threw a stick knows that they deflect to different directions depending on their angle of impact.
* they are far more bulky and heavier, so you can carry less
* the range difference is negligible
* if you remove the wooden handle, you have a modern hand grenade and saved a few laborious manufacturing steps and 2/3 of the material
* you have a higher failure rate to throw them with a shrapnel liner of simple design
So in short: They are a typical example of needless German over-engineering and Germany realised this, too, in the early 1940s. You can produce as fancy a hand grenade as you want, but it still loses you the war if you can only produce 1 hand grenade for every 3 grenades needed, for the sole reason of the one you do produce being marginally better to an irrelevant degree, instead of producing 4 grenades for every 3 you need.
Wanna see you do that with your stupid egg-like thingies.
More material is more expensive
We still honor this tradition by playing Kub, and why helikopterkast is banned by constitution. Higher chance of it getting stuck on something and that’s a big ooopsie.
