The facts about Britain’s arms sales to Israel

  1. The UK Government’s relationship with Israel is under [greater strain than ever](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/lammy-loses-patience-netanyahu-over-monstrous-gaza-3705472?ico=in-line_link). It steadfastly supports the country’s right to self-defence against hostile actors like Iran and proxies such as Hezbollah, but has been increasing pressure on Israel to agree a ceasefire in Gaza.

Having previously banned exports of military equipment that could be used by Israel in Gaza, Sir Keir Starmer threatened to take “[further concrete actions](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/joint-statement-from-the-leaders-of-the-united-kingdom-france-and-canada-on-the-situation-in-gaza-and-the-west-bank)” if Israel did not cease its latest “wholly disproportionate” military escalation, in a joint statement with the French and Canadian leaders last month.

Now, the UK has joined several nations in announcing sanctions on two far-right ministers in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government over “[repeated incitements of violence against Palestinian communities](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-and-partners-unite-to-sanction-ministers-inciting-west-bank-violence)” in the occupied West Bank. Israel called this move “outrageous”.

Pro-Palestinian campaigners argue the UK is still not doing enough to end the war in Gaza. They remain angry that the Government allows any military sales at all to Israel. Figures released last month showed that licensed arms exports to Israel increased from less than £30,000 in the first quarter of 2024 to [£127.6m](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/may/21/uk-mps-to-grill-ministers-over-arms-exports-to-israel) in the final quarter.

This comes as Israel [launched a series of strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities and top officials on Friday morning](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/why-has-israel-attacked-iran-understand-the-conflict-in-three-minutes-3747610?ico=in-line_link). Netanyahu said the operation would continue for several days. The International Atomic Energy Agency has also announced that Iran is [failing to meet its nuclear non-proliferation commitments](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce3v6w2qr12o), for the first time in 20 years.

So how is the UK continuing to support and supply the Israeli armed forces and its military industry, and what restrictions has it imposed?

  2. Very lucrative sector, funds many good British jobs we want to keep.

Israel are our ally in the region.

    I see no problem here.
