In 2019, a group of thieves stole a fully functional 18-karat gold toilet titled “America” by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan from Blenheim Palace, Winston Churchill’s birthplace. The satirical artwork, valued at over $6 million, was ripped from its plumbing in a smash-and-grab heist that took under six minutes and caused serious damage to the historic site. The toilet was never recovered and is believed to have been chopped up and sold. Two of the burglars, James Sheen, a roofer with a long criminal record, and Michael Jones, his employee, were sentenced in June 2025 to four years and two years and three months in prison, respectively.

  2. I know it’s gaudy, I know it’s overhyped, I still kinda wanna take a dump in a solid gold toilet just once.

  3. ‘A roofer with a long criminal record.’ They really should proofread their articles for tautologies .

  4. There’s far better uses for prison cells than protecting toilets.

  5. I love how the toilet is gold but the actual bathroom space looks like a service station shitter

  6. It goes loverly, wiv me new golden bath tub and sink.

  7. So they got away with $6m of loot and only got a combined 6 years as punishment? $1m a year for playing XBox in prison? Sign me up. Why don’t we all just become career criminals, if the court system keeps making it look so appealing?
