The tech conference Nexus Luxembourg 2025 takes place on 17 and 18 June. Big names in technology and business are expected to attend, as are a number of ministers. Prime minister  (CSV), who delivered , deputy prime minister and foreign minister  (DP), finance minister  (CSV) and research and digitalisation minister  (DP) are expected to attend and will be speaking over the two days. The Chamber of Deputies will welcome two European Commissioners for exchanges of views. On Monday it will be the European Commissioner for the environment, water resilience and a competitive circular economy, Jessika Roswall, and on Thursday it will be the European Commissioner for financial services, Maria Luís Albuquerque, who will talk about the Savings and Investments Union. It is also a week dedicated to committee work in parliament, with the major issues being the digitisation of electoral operations, the Court of Auditors’ special report on the costs of large-scale testing, affordable housing in public-private rental partnerships and the creation of an Individual Housing Grants Authority. Prior to the summit in The Hague, the Nato parliamentary assembly will be holding its second parliamentary summit on 19 and 20 June in Brussels. The president of the Chamber of Deputies  (CSV) will attend the event.

It’ll be a plenary session for the European Parliament. Amongst the issues on the agenda are preparations for the European Council on 26 and 27 June, the vote on new legislation to combat child sexual abuse, an assessment of the impact and benefits of the Recovery and Resilience Facility funds invested to date in the member states, as well as debates and votes on the Clean Industry Plan and the European Commission’s 2024 report on the rule of law. The agreement on road freight transport between the EU and Ukraine will be put to the vote, and there will be a debate on the dramatic situation of illegally detained Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war. On Wednesday, King Abdullah II of Jordan will address MEPs at a formal sitting.

Luxembourg’s national day is celebrated on the grand duke’s birthday. So are all Luxembourg monarchs born on 23 June? Obviously not. Grand Duchess Charlotte, who reigned from 1919 to 1964, was born on 29 January. In 1961, in view of the harsh climate, it was decided that the sovereign’s birthday would be celebrated on 23 June each year. For the record, it was not until 1947 that this day of celebration became a public holiday. The festivities kick off this Thursday, 19 June.

Monday 16 June

Government. Foreign minister Xavier Bettel (DP) and defence minister  (DP) will take part in the 55th International Paris Air Show at Le Bourget. On the agenda will be a visit to the Luxembourg pavilion, during which both ministers will deliver a speech, as well as bilateral political meetings and meetings with representatives of the defence, aeronautics and space industry.

Government. Culture minister  (DP) presents the book XV Patrimoine Industriel Exemples de réaffectations et de mises en valeur, designed, produced and published by the Institut national pour le patrimoine architectural (INPA). Following the publication of books XII, on feudal and fortified heritage, and XX, focusing on rural heritage, the INPA highlights restoration, redevelopment and reuse projects for buildings, sites and objects belonging to the grand duchy’s industrial heritage.

Council of the European Union. Informal meeting of agriculture ministers in Warsaw until 17 June. An energy council is being held in Brussels during which ministers will be invited to give their views on the RepowerEU roadmap, which the European Commission published on 6 May. Ministers are also expected to approve council conclusions on strengthening the energy union through greater energy security.

Tuesday 17 June

Council of the European Union. Environment council meets in Luxembourg. The ministers will discuss the fate of end-of-life vehicles and exchange views on preparations for the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Cop30), to be held in the Brazilian city of Belém in November 2025.

European Commission. The commission presents the fifth omnibus on defence and the evolution of the securitisation framework.

Chamber of Deputies. The finance committee is examining two double taxation agreements, the first with Argentina (parliamentary dossier 8537) and the second with the Sultanate of Oman (parliamentary dossier 8538). MPs will then look at maintaining the Bëllegen Akt of €40,000 beyond 30 June 2025 (parliamentary dossier 8540), the transition of the Mifid/Mifir review, listing and ESAP directives (parliamentary dossier 8498) and the reform of the Land Registry and Topography Administration (parliamentary dossier 8330B).

Chamber of Deputies. Committee consideration of bill 8395A on the designation of competent bodies and authorities and the information point under Regulation (EU) 2018/1724 on data governance.

Chamber of Deputies. MPs will consider motions tabled by (LSAP) relating to mental health in formal and non-formal education and pupil wellbeing.

OECD. The international organisation presents its new report, titled “Global Drought Outlook.” This report provides an analysis of the trends that characterise drought, the factors that promote it and its consequences against the backdrop of climate change. It also examines the question of how to improve resilience to drought by applying certain measures and practices across all sectors.

US central bank. The Federal Reserve’s monetary committee is meeting on 17 and 18 June. We should know whether at the end of these two days–as US president Donald Trump would like–the central bank will cut interest rates.

Wednesday 18 June

Government. Meeting between finance minister Gilles Roth and European Commissioner Maria Luís Albuquerque. The meeting will focus on European financial services and the Savings and Investment Union.

Government. The minister for the environment, climate and biodiversity  (CSV) will award the “Drëpsi” certificates of excellence to nine drinking water suppliers on 18 June 2025. This award recognises the efforts made by local authorities and local authority associations to ensure impeccable water quality.

Government. On 18 and 19 June 2025, the ministry of education, children and youth is organising the third Edutrends conference, an interactive forum for the exchange of ideas, good practice and innovation in the field of education. The 2025 edition is entirely devoted to the vocational training of tomorrow. The conference has two parts: first, a conference open to the public will be held on 18 June at Kinepolis Kirchberg in the presence of the minister; workshops will be held on the 19th. European Court of Auditors. The court publishes a special report on remotely managed EU humanitarian aid. The European Commission uses a remote management approach when providing humanitarian aid through its partners in areas that are difficult to access, either for security reasons or because of restrictions imposed by local authorities. In practice, EU humanitarian aid is not provided directly, but is channelled through partners operating on the ground. Between 2019 and 2023, the European Commission approved 164 partially or fully remotely managed humanitarian operations in 10 countries. The EU’s contribution to these actions amounted to €918m (around 8% of the EU’s total humanitarian expenditure for the period).

Thursday 19 June

Government. On the occasion of the celebration of the national day, the Luxembourg Army invites to its military ceremony at the Place Guillaume in Diekirch. Forces commander colonel Alain Schoeben and defence minister Yuriko Backes will introduce the festivities, which start at 10am.

Council of the European Union. Eurogroup meeting in Luxembourg on competitiveness and the digital euro. Also in Luxembourg, a social policy council will look at equal treatment and the role of the elderly in society and on the labour market.

OECD. The organisation is publishing the ninth edition of its biennial report on public governance, “Public Administration 2025.” The report provides an overview of government performance and presents the latest available data on public finances, employment, institutions, budgetary practices, risk management and citizen satisfaction. This year, the focus will be on the governance of the green transition.

Friday 20 June

Council of the European Union. At a health council meeting in Luxembourg, ministers will debate the legislative act on critical medicines, which aims to improve the availability of critical medicines in the EU and combat shortages of medicines such as antibiotics, insulin and painkillers. The council is also expected to approve conclusions on promoting and protecting children’s and young people’s mental health in the digital age.
