Popular driving simulator Euro Truck Simulator 2 is set to expand its map to include Iceland, bringing the Nordic island nation to players’ screens for the first time.
The new downloadable content (DLC), announced by developer SCS Software, will offer players plenty of unique driving challenge.
Players can expect winding mountain roads, narrow coastal routes, and true-to-life weather conditions that reflect the island’s famously unpredictable climate.
Release Date TBD
Although a release date has yet to be confirmed, the development team shared teaser images on the game platform, Steam.
In them, we see virtual renditions of Icelandic landscapes. Among them was the continental tectonic plates in West Iceland, as well as a small town.
For one, we at IR think the graphics look beautiful, having captured the nuances of our unique, volcanically-sculpted land.
Fans have welcomed the news, with many praising the addition of a lesser-travelled region. “I always enjoy a challenging drive. With Iceland’s interesting geography I’m looking forward to it!,” one player wrote in the Steam announcement’s comments section.
Euro Truck Simulator 2, originally released in 2012, allows players to build a freight business while driving in realistic versions of European countries.
The Iceland expansion is, yet again, expected to boost interest in this long enduring game, particularly among Nordic players and even travel enthusiasts.
More details are expected in the coming weeks.
Finally, a chance to see Iceland…
Excuse the personal ancedote (on a news article, especially) but for someone like me—a resident of Iceland who enjoys the call of the open road—there’s always that desire to get out there and see what the wide, open, majestic wilds have to offer.
Except, of course, I do not own car.
In my defense, I also refuse to take the bus. That is a defense because I’ve found the bus system here to be better suited at frustrating its customers rather than delivering them places in a timely manner. Thus, I’ve resigned myself to a downtown Reykjavik imprisonment, at least for now.
Thankfully, for what I lack in a motor vehicle, I make up for in a home PC. I might not be able to drive it—successfully, anyway—but it’s more than capable of downloading Euro Truck Simulator 2. (And, even more recent games with demanding graphics, but who’s bragging…)
(Truthfully, I’ve owned ETS2 for years, spending long evenings making dull, simulated cargo deliveries between places like Stockport and Felixstowe. All off my own volition, no less. But, having spent these hours longing to instead deliver fake wooden palettes from, say, Selfoss to Ísafjörður, it would appear my prayers have been answered.)
If you think these ambitions sad, I assure you that it gets worse still. But for those abroad looking to experience, or re-experience, the beauty of Iceland’s landscapes, then this DLC might just be the next best thing.
