Women-only tower block in Acton to open next summer

  1. A UK first except of course for 227 Wood Lane just down the road in White City which is also under construction by Women’s Pioneer Housing lol. Good journalism. Which incidentally was almost halved in size and no of homes (despite being located opposite Imperial’s student living skyscraper) thanks to LBHF officers and local NIMBYs.

  2. Is this legal? To me it looks like discrimination. Very ugly and offensive to anyone who doesn’t fit into that category.

  3. “Brook House in Acton will provide a “lifeline” to women and survivors of domestic abuse struggling to find a home”….for those only reading the headline..

  4. Based on the article, I assume the legal justification for this housing block being single-gender is that it fulfils the legitimate aim of providing affordable housing to female survivors of dometic abuse? Seems fair enough.

  5. Do they ever have projects for men who are homeless?

Edit: it was an actual question, I guess learning isn’t ok here.

  6. What makes this a “UK first?”

Isn’t this just a domestic violence shelter?

Or is it because it’s providing long term accommodation rather than temporary accommodation?

  7. >with the cost of renting a home on average less than a quarter of an equivalently sized home in the private sector

I’m by no means up to date on the cost of social housing but COT DAMN that seems impressively affordable! Out of interest, is anyone who is more knowledgeable on the subject aware if that’s representative in the London social housing market?

  8. If this is long-term housing, what happens when one of the residents gets a new boyfriend and wants to live with them? If it’s a choice between moving out or ignoring the rules, you could see people choosing the latter. Not saying that it’s a reason for it to not exist, but it seems logistically a bit awkward

  9. Meanwhile male suicide and homelessness is at a record high.

  10. What is wrong with the headline or has it been changed?

  11. I realise that everything turns into a pissing contest of we were the first… but didn’t Pioneer housing do this already ? I’m sure I remember visiting pioneer way near the westway some years ago ? Which was a women only block (more like terrace)
I’m sure they have done their research, but I’m interested to see how this fits in with housing law, which of course gives various statutory rights.

  12. What happens if one of the tenant will have a male child, growing in to a teenager.
What if one of the resident finds a new love and marries?
