UK set to introduce new sugar rules for drinks

  1. I only really drink Diet Coke’s so it won’t make much of a difference to me. I am not sure why they don’t just introduce a blanket levy rather than cutting and cutting, though.

  2. Should probably consider applying this levy to snack foods with high sugar contents too.

  3. They just swap the sugar for things like aspartame, they say can “possibly give you cancer” and other artificial sweeteners that will give you the shits.

  4. It all just seems stupid to me. I am not convinced that diet drinks will lead to a healthier society or even a less obese society.

We are just making everyday items more expensive which lead to less expendable income which leads eventually to less time or poorer life choices.

  5. How about give us freedom of choice, i usually drink sugar free dilute juice but now and again i like to buy the glass bottles of coke.

  6. Garbage headline immediately contradicted by first sentence. “Set to” isn’t accurate.

  7. Fanta in the UK is hardly even sweet anymore. People should have freedom of choice within reasonable limits

  8. Wooohooo so they are further going to ruin fizzy drinks. I love this regime 😀

  9. I’ll believe the government gives a toss about our health when they start offering subsidised or free gym membership and a detailed nutrition section of the school curriculum, perhaps even to the point of making it an obtained qualification like the other subjects. The future savings on the NHS will pay for both of these.

  10. Just let adults make an informed choice and don’t treat me like a child. I cycle a lot and it’s getting more and more difficult to get sugar drinks in cafes – I need the sugar in the drink for fuel. The gov have no problem with people stuffing 1000 calories of sugar and fat in a cake, why make drinks any different.

  11. Fantastic so let’s give us all sugar free drinks instead and pump it full of artificial sweeteners which have also been proven to not be good for us as well and can be worse than sugar itself…. Screw freedom of choice, screw anyone that hates artificial sweeteners…

I used to like soft drinks but with all drinks now increasing the amount of artificial sweeteners they taste absolutely horrible with a sickly after taste. It’s vile.

How about instead of doing this, invest in money in parks, invest or give incentives for activities for adults groups, get people more active. People having a sedentary lifestyle have a WAY bigger impact than people drinking soft drinks.

  12. How about ban the toxic artificial sweeteners that have ruined once Tasty drinks and allow sugar only

  13. At this point, the UK is a hospital/care home with a country stuck on the side.

  14. It doesn’t really matter now, the original reduction / replacement with sweeteners has already ruined every single soft drink except standard Coca Cola and a couple of variations.

  15. I wish the UK government worked as hard to close the tax loopholes as they do to make fizzy pop taste like chemical piss.

  16. Type 2 diabetes is a debilitating disease. I have it, it’s not at all pleasant.

We also have a problem with overweight and unfit children.

And don’t get me started on oral health and hygiene.

Anything the Governemt can do to tackle these issues is fine by me.

  17. this comment section is something else.

a monster in the uk has 43g of sugar, that’s disgusting. good on the government for actually caring about public safety.

the uk has a major obesity issue, it costs the taxpayer millions each year due to pressure on the NHS.

in all fairness this issue can in part be atttributed to poor education on nutrition (however i’d make the argument that this isn’t an excuse given the plethora of online resources regarding nutrition) , but i do think the reason a lot of brits are fat is the surprising quantity of sugar in our foods.

we eat biscuits all the time, drink tea everyday. it’s not healthy at all and the government needs to step in and stop this shit before we end up in a situation where every brit has major heart complications.

and to all those saying about how “people should have the free choice between them”, the people have obviously proven they aren’t capable of making this decision and the sad reality is they never will. AND even if they made the decision to have a low sugar drink 9 times out of 10 that 1 time is so bad and unhealthy it defeats the purpose of the 9 times you chose right.

A lot of people also mentioning the fact the low sugar drinks contain artificial sweeteners, as if the uk doesn’t have extremely high regulations on these sweeteners to ensure they don’t cause health complications. Also if the government banned both the low sugar and high sugar drinks at once, people would have no choice and be upset, the government know this so they “ban” the “worse” one now and then later down the line when people realise soda and energy drinks taste like shit and they were just addicted to the sugar and caffeine they can then “ban” the low sugar ones as well, and we can act like responsible adults and drink water.

  18. Their just replacing it with aspertamine, which is worse for you

  19. More chemical sweetener slop that tastes absolutely awful and does god knows what to our bodies

  20. I hate the sugar tax so so much.

I occasionally, maybe twice a week have a fizzy drink. Now the only one left with actual sugar is coke.

I got a free bottle of Rubicon mango the other day, it used to be a great drink. Had some and got a horrible headache from the fake sugar. All of the drinks with fake sugar give me headaches.

So now I can only drink original coke as they are the only one who didnt change recipe, just because some fat bastards couldnt control themselves and the government decided tax was the answer.
