In short:
The Australian government has imposed sanctions on 60 vessels in Russia's shadow fleet of oil tankers for the first time.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Minister of Foreign Affairs Penny Wong said these sanctions "reinforce Australia's consistent commitment" to ensuring Russia "face consequences".

What's next?
The sanctions take hold immediately and the government has once again called on Russia to "immediately end this war and withdraw from Ukrainian territory".

  2. Australia imports oil and refined petroleum from different countries but not directly from russia. Refined petroleum mainly imported from Singapore, South Korea and Japan. Japan recently started russian oil imports from a joint venture LNG plant (also produces oil) for which an exemption was provided by US and EU. Singapore and S.Korea do no support the import of russian oil. Given this it unlikely that these sanctions would have any impact. Its easy to provide a list of vessels that would not result in any impact to Australia. Its reported to be over 1000 ships in the russian shadow fleet. We are a small country but we really need to do something that has more impact. If every small country did teh same the impact to russia would be great.
