The European Union, through EU4ClimateResilience, will support Moldova in aligning its national framework with European environmental policies and will facilitate the implementation of projects in the field of climate change adaptation at the local level. These measures are intended to protect the well-being of the population and the ecosystems in Moldova. This was mentioned by the team leader within the EU Delegation, at a conference organized in Chisinau, reports IPN.

Julda Kielyte emphasized that, currently, numerous funds are available for local development and that it is important to be aware of these opportunities, especially since they can bring benefits to the community. The challenge remains to prepare projects that can be implemented in a relatively short term and provide tangible results for the inhabitants of rural areas, the European official pointed out.

“We have agreed with the Government for the next three years to have ambitious reforms, including regarding the green transition,” clarified Julda Kielyte.

Present at the event, the Minister of Environment, Sergiu Lazarencu, announced that after January 1, 2028, Moldova will be eligible for European pre-accession funds. To win assistance, the developed projects must include components of climate, environment, and pollution. “My request to everyone is to develop energy and climate plans, which will help us be eligible for the absorption of European funds,” said the minister.

Minister Lazarencu stated that climate change is a visible phenomenon. “The increased frequency of extreme events, such as droughts and storms, highlights the essential role of local public authorities. Although policies are developed by central public authorities, efficient implementation can be achieved in partnership with city halls,” emphasized the dignitary.

“The current event is an opportunity to advance dialogue, to exchange experiences and, collectively, to shape Moldova’s European path,” said Eva Kracht, the Director General for International and European Policies at the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

“EU4ClimateResilience” is an initiative that supports the ecological transition, enhances decarbonization, improves energy security, and increases resilience to climate change in the Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine). The project is co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry of the Environment and is implemented by GIZ and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
