It came a day after Prince William appeared solo at the races after his wife Kate Middleton pulled out at the last minute. She is continuing to manage her appearances at public events amid her recovery from cancer treatment. The 43-year-old announced in January that she was in remission from an undisclosed cancer, just days after her birthday.

The royal race fans were looking for gold as Ascot’s third day, which used to be known as Ladies Day, is Gold Cup day. The two-and-a-half mile marathon is one of the best-known races in the week.

A day earlier, on June 18, William might not have had Kate alongside him, but he was surrounded by close friends and family. He was spotted sharing a a warm smile and lively chat with his mother-in-law mother, Carole Middleton, who was there with her daughter-in-law, Alizée Thévenet, who is married to Kate’s brother, James Middleton.

Some of his oldest friends, from Thomas van Straubenzee and his wife Lucy to James Meade and his wife Laura, were among the guests. Also there was Sam Waley-Cohen, who has known Kate since she was a teen.

This is the second year in a row that Kate has missed Royal Ascot. Last year, William also attended solo as Kate was undergoing chemotherapy for an undisclosed form of cancer. She announced in March 2024 that she was being treated and in September of that year told the world in a video message that her chemotherapy had ended.
