Other than my Sixer badge, this was a huge achievement. Getting the brick from the deep end was up there too. Kids these days have no idea the sense of achievement this gave…….

  1. I never got mine. The instructor shouted at us so much that I got upset and messed up the test.

  2. I couldn’t take my cycling proficiency (late 00s) because I had a dodgy knee, so I had to sit in a different year’s classroom and do homework while the other kids got to have fun. Boo.

  3. They skipped my year in primary school, no idea why but we never did it.

  4. I flake fractured my arm the day before they came in and couldnt do the training in school so I’m not even Certified </3 even though I could ride my bike better than everyone at the school and even in highschool until I met some mountain bikers in college

  5. Nice. I’ll resist the urge to compete and whip out my 80’s swimming badges.

  6. I got mine too! As a dyspraxic child I didn’t realise this would be the crowning glory of my cycling achievements!

  7. Yeah I had one of those too. Got my bronze, silver and gold swimming badges as well.

  8. I got one too and not only that I got the highest score in the school!

  9. it always looks like that bloke is smoking a pipe to me. I guess it’s supposed to be the peak of a hat sticking out?

  10. Not a humble brag, just a regular brag. If you’re disguising a boast as a moan, then it becomes a humble brag.

  11. Bloody cheapskates never gave me a medal, now I don’t get to humblebrag for internet points to strangers. Absolute travesty I say. >:(

  12. I lost my badge, along with my other school badges and my 6th form tie. To this day I do not know where they could have been as I rarely if ever got them out of the wardrobe. Don’t lose yours! 👍🏻

  13. At my school we had to pass this before we were allowed to cycle there. I guess the curent equivalent would be an SUV Passenger Proficiency badge.

  14. I didn’t have a bike so I couldn’t take the test.

Getting the brick from the bottom of the swimming pool and swimming a length on a nightie (whilst the boys got to wear pyjamas!) Is up there, too.

I did get a Times Table Expert badge though. Shit at them now, though.

Have managed to succeed in life without putting that on my CV because I didn’t want to brag.

  15. i’ll counter that wilh my BAGA forward roll level 1 certificate and a 3rd place in sports day obstacle race 1978 certificate that i still have.

  16. Me too 🙌🏼

I was also in the “inter schools road safety “ team .

We had to memorise the Highway Code and we’re asked all manner of questions on driving/cycling and describing various road signs from memory.
We came second and got a shield 🛡️

    🤣🤣

  17. I crashed my bike and spent the day in hospital on the last day of the cycling proficiency week. They still gave me the badge 😂

  18. I still have my badge too! And my swimming badges that got sewn onto my swimsuit. I think I peaked too soon.

Do kids not go through Cycling Proficiency these days?

  19. I have one, some kid was lying next to a broken bike in the road and had it pinned to his schoolbag. I felt he didn’t deserve it.

  20. We did the test. Never got a fucking badge tho! I feel cheated.

  21. We all were. The only thing you achieved is not losing it, which to be fair is pretty good going

  22. I used to be the best on a bike in my year. I used to sit sideways on my bike and roll it into the bike racks all cool like. Until the little swot Bethany complained about me. Teachers said I couldn’t ride my bike to school unless I did the very easy cycling proficiency thing. Never rode my bike to school again

  23. Yeh but did you do advanced cycling

    Watched hot fuzz yesterday

  24. That’s nice and all, but I got an official driving license from Legoland Windsor

Who’s the cool kid now 😎

  25. I wasn’t allowed to take it because my teacher said it was only for the top students.

  26. It should be mandatory, I did this in primary school.
Humble brag, I won the slow bicycle race afterwards. That probably wouldn’t be allowed either now for health and safety reasons.

  27. Because some people are bound to be wondering:

    “cycling proficiency” doesn’t exist anymore

it was replaced in iirc 2003 with “Bikeability” which is a much more structured program with a centrally defined set of rules and guidance for what you teach cyclists about how to ride on the road.

cycling proficiency was basically decided by the person who delivered the lessons with some guidance from ROSPA but for instance I was tuaght to ride in the gutter, something which is now known to be the most dangerous place on the road for cyclists, whilst other people will have been taught (correctly) to ride away from the kerb. Nowadays every child or adult everywhere in the country gets taught the same things

Also lots of children never went on to the roads for cycling proficiency and were taught with cones in playgrounds but every child (who has shown they are capable of doing so) gets taken on the road for Bikeability.

Currently in England there is funding for around 50% of school children to get Bikeability training, I’m not sure how well funded they are in scotland or wales, and I think there’s separate scheme for NI as they have a different highway code.

on road training usually happens in year 6, the last year of primary school.

and they still get badges/certificates etc and I’m sure feel exactly the same sense of achievement we did when passing cycling proficiency.

  28. Humblebrag: my BMX was deemed too dangerous to sit the test on. Admittedly, I had replaced the reflectors on the wheels with Spokey Dokeys, and I had removed the front brake to do stunts, and removed all the padding on the frame and handlebars…

  29. For mine ages 8 and 2 weeks. New Currys purple and yellow 24inch wheel bike with lights. South West London 1965. Chuffed.

  30. Pretty sure my badge was much shitter than that

  31. Incredible. The memories came flooding back. #Where’s my badge now🙂🤔
