  49. There’s a lot of jokes in this thread, but the implications are incredible to consider.

    Putin actually saved Russia from the depths of the 90’s. Pre-2022, he was on a 22 year heater. If he had died pre-invasion, he would have legitimately gone down as one of Russia’s greatest leaders.

    Ignoring economic reality however, is how Russia got to such depths in the 90’s. Essentially, Gorbachev finally accepted the reality that they couldn’t financially support the eastern block. He allowed them to liberalize, the Soviet Union’s lack of power was revealed, the Berlin War came down in ‘89, and the government completely dissolved in ‘91. What followed was their true position under market conditions. Then they dug the hole deeper through Gov issued IOUs, which inevitably couldn’t transfer value fully from top to bottom as “money” flowed through the economy.

    Thats the reality when you pretend real economic conditions don’t exist. The hole is dug deeper and deeper until reality is acknowledged again, and by that point true despair is felt
