Had one land on me the other day and I swear it must have been eating the neighbourhood cats.
I’m 57 and I saw my first one last year. Amazing creatures.
Where in the uk are you , never seen one in the 55 years I’ve been on the planet lol
Ooh convergent evolution!
Oh that’s a proper bobowler that is
I’ve only ever seen these in Greece. Didn’t think we had them here?
Beautiful. And you’re very lucky to get a photo of it. I’ve only seen one in my life – in London of al places despite living half my life in the countryside. Incredible example of convergent evolution; even down to their “tails” they are shaped like and move like hummingbirds.
Mothra
that is so cool!!
Is that what you tell your missus five inches looks like?
It’s mothman
If that’s 5 inches long then I’m Tommy Lee.
I bloody love hummingbird moths! They’re summer visitors, wintering the southern France & Spain!
Hummingbird Hawk Moth! Amazing little critters. I remember seeing loads abroad on holiday a few years ago but have still never seen one in the UK.
Should have chucked a pokeball at it…
Think you guys have solved life long mystery reckon it was one of these that frightened the living daylights out of myself back in the early 80s it came bombing out some wall roses thought it was a locust obviously we don’t have them here but then again I didn’t think we had this monster moth either. That’s an excellent post you’ve really made my day
You don’t often see blurs in the wild
r/whatsthisbug is good for identifications.
It is a Hummingbird Hawk Moth – you get loads in South France. Lovely things
Hummingbird Hawk Moth, good find! They are scarce in parts of the UK so it would be decent of you to notify the local recorder and/or the national moth recording scheme https://mothrecording.org/

Just a moth, its not uncommon to see big ones like that occasionally!
Hawk moth. Probably a specific type but I can’t remember any but the Poplar hawk moth, and it isn’t that one. Nice photos.
