Every day this conversation on the Netherlands sub. Trying to convince expats that the Netherlands is more than just Amsterdam and although we have a high proficiency in English, we prefer to speak Dutch.
Pedro when you say Hola.
OMG let’s be best friends, I’ll invite you to my sister’s wedding
I feel like if your moving somewhere abroad, try to learn the local language, it does make me cringe a little when i see people on the local news having to talk through a translator for a story because they can’t speak english in spite of living in the UK, although i do respect that english isn’t the easiest to learn sometimes.
However, if your on holiday for a couple of days somewhere, i can understand not knowing the local language, but that’s just how i feel.
In France you’re good if you can say : “Une baguette pas trop cuîte, s’il vous plaît” 👌
Very Por, much Tugal
Yes like tf ?? It’s not like my ancestors died so I could speak French and not that rosbif language !
I should give up on that ancient language and get in the real world…
Molière ain’t allat.
Expecting everyone else to speak english when you are in another country is entitlement. Sure if you are a tourist but not if you are planning for staying for a longer time.
It’s better to show that you are learning and maybe not get everything right rather then just expecting everyone else to speak english for you!
When I opened reddit today, I was not prepared to be explained that I am lonely because I can’t speak a lick of Turkish.
Do other countries have that too? Half of germany‘s english speaking subs are exactly OPs picture
The downvote’s color is white on blue. Here take a look.
OP is wo brave for this, not living in the middle of CHAD, which isn’t itself surrounded by countries where their language is a common second or third language, and who don’t have access to all the dubbed media.
It’s still true, though.
Sister had a relationship of 4 years or so with a Brit. He lived here in NL longer than that. Hardly spoke a word of Dutch. People would only try and speak English in a group with him present for like and hour or so. After that it was just smartphone time for him because people would switch to Dutch anyway. Obviously it did not last.
I told a college i was learning Portuguese because i want to retire there.
She was very surprised that i would learn the language beforehand.
