  1. Why does GCC seem to hate libraries & librarians?

Those were always the best things when I was growing up

  2. We all know Weegies Cannae read, but how are we going to fix that without libraries? It’s not like they can afford books of their own!

  3. I put this in the Glasgow sub, and I will put it here:

Petition your local councillors, tell them what I put down here, ask for support from CILIPS (Scottish Library and Information Professionals Society) if needed and get lots of folks (preferably parents with children at the affected schools!) to complete a: [Public Petitions – Glasgow City Council](https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/petitions)

More info on what school librarians actually contribute in r/glasgow

  4. Replacing Librarians with Assistant Librarians, 3 area Librarians and a Principal Librarian. Because everyone knows the best way to reduce cost and improve services is extra layers of management

  5. Fucking idiots, in a cost of living crisis let’s get rid of skilled professionals who provide community spaces. Oh and yeah being literate and accessing books definitely never been a useful thing.

    I hope CILIP gets involved.

    A disgrace.

  6. Awful. I taught in Glasgow City Council secondary schools and the number of senior (4th- 6th) year pupils who couldn’t, or could barely, read or write was shocking. Pupils who had come as refugees 6 years ago who couldn’t read or write English. Teachers at breaking point because the picture is so bad, the problem so large, that it’s not possible to teach phonics to a 14 year old when you’re trained in secondary and have 32 other kids in the room (all with their own needs).

But let’s put another obstacle into kids’ literacy. Awful.

  7. The important thing about libraries is that they are a place that exists without costing money. I don’t know about the schools aspect much, but libraries in general are vital.

  8. Here in Argyll, our kids’ high school doesn’t even have a library 🤦

  9. >In February 2024, the council approved a review of the school library service, with a target saving of £100,000.

Such a small ‘saving’ for something that will have a huge impact. Really sad to see. I hope they reconsider.

  10. It’s so sickening to see education being destroyed in the country where modern libraries were created (I was born in Dunfermline where Andrew Carnegie, the founder of the modern day library was born).

Honestly, the rich and powerful are the ones destroying this, it’s a clear attack on the poor and literal class warfare.

What do I know though and how much can I affect this…very little I suspect 😞
